Absolutely HID.

I have the Enduro ($300 @ Performance) and haven't had any problems with it.

Don't let that stop you! I have a cheap pair of Performance, View Point, lights. They are not as bright or as light or even last as long as the other lights. But I don't care - I can see good enough and I love riding at night!

Thanks for all the input guys. Not sure exactly what to do yet, but I will probably get the Enduro system because it's the cheapest.

Thanks again!

The only light I've used is the Niterider Classic Plus.

I got it because it kicks out a reasonable amount of light and the price wasn't too much to swallow.

The light unit itself is nice and I like the idea of having two bulbs. If one dies, the ride can be completed without initiating repairs in the dark.

The amount of light seems adequate, and usually I use only one of the bulbs to conserve battery power. However, on a fast downhill, even with both bulbs lit, you have to adjust your riding style because you just can't see that far out. Maybe this is where the HID would excel.

Having a light really expands your riding options, especially in the winter when it gets dark so early.

The Lupine Edison 10 is supposed to be the best light ever, hands down,I dont own one but thats what I hear, pretty pricey though. Move your cursor over the flag icon in the top right corner of the second page to change to english Lupine Lighting Systems

Seriously...that's like refusing to drive a car to work because you can't afford a Ferrari...when a Ford would probably do everything you need it to do.

In other words...that View Point system our Family Guy fan was talking about is cheap, and it works well. I think they were $109 last time I was in there...it's a 30w halogen system (10w + 20w) with a good battery and a good burn time. I have the exact same system (Supergo HL-20) and it's been great. Throws plenty of light and lasts a long time.

Why would I spend spend $500 on a light when $99 works well for me?! You can always upgrade later. Besides, what if you plunk down serious coin for a high-digit light system only to find out you don't like riding at night?

I'd recommend starting with something like the View Point, Nite Rider Classic, etc. - unless you think most of your night riding is gonna be 50mph downhills. If nothing else, at least you'll have a back-up light if you feel you need to upgrade.

Okay, this is where its hard to read sarcasm over the internet I will be getting some lights soon enough and upgrade them later.

That's a good point too. I bought a Sigma EVO x halogen for $100 when I first got into it just to make sure I liked it. I didn't go for HIDs until I realized I was riding at night on a weekly basis and majorly stepping up my speed. That being said, I do still think a $300 enduro is a better way to spend your coin than $100 or so for a halogen. But you definitely can start small and upgrade later.

Just stopped by Cynergy today, and they have the Nite Rider Firestorms for $325:

NiteRider

I might have to pounce on that, even though I don't need one right now. Is this deal too good to pass up?

I just picked up as couple of the Nite rider flight HID systems I'm waiting for them to show up in the mail. I will let you know how they work out when I get them. All I know right now is they are the lightest I have found. They run around $500.00 I hope they are as good as the other HID system I was using.I had moab helmet set up. That has been going strong for 6+ night rides and I still haven't charged it. The wife took it over. I think it's one of the brightest lights I have seen on the fullerton loop. My friend just picked up the Nite rider Minewt Dual LED system and it seems to really rock and its way light. It runs around $140.00 Can burn for close to 2 HRs Not bad.
Perfect for the tail end of a thursday night loop ride.
The best way to learn about what light to get is go do the fullerton loop with no light and ride next to people who have lights then ask questions . You will then know what light you like. See ya later I hope that helps you.

Hey Jason,
So do the Thursday evening rides actually return after dark this time of year?

Default Ha Ha Welll

The thursday rides return after dark if you are sweeping. Or somone brakes a chain then gets a flat. If I just leave ride the whole time I wouldn't need a light. It's fun to take new people to the loop every time I can. I don't mind sweeping I know I am not going to get lost and my bike is not going to brake so I can hang back. I have learned that when you take a new rider on a ride and go to fast they never want to go again and they throw up all over the place and thats just nasty . HA HA then im throwing up its just anarchy.

My husband and I each got Phantom i single beam 20W with smart switches for 10W/15W/20W. We are pretty pleased with these, found out about them on mtbr.com(I think they were mtbr.com choice award winners)

If it's for the MiNewt X2 Dual I would say yes. If it's for the single I would say no. I work part-time at Beyond Bikes in San Diego and our price is $209.99 for the dual and $159.99 for the single.

If you're interested, we price match too though, so maybe call and ask for Zack on Monday. He should be able to hook you up and maybe help with shipping too.

I'd look for a Dinotte 200L instead, a few more lumens (not that you can really tell I don't think), a for a few more bucks but gives you the option of both helmet and handlebar mount.
