I am writing you to inform you of the destruction of popular part of the Fullerton trail system. I know how meticulously you maintain the trail system in Fullerton, which is why it surprised me that a permit was possibly issued to allow an individual to use an fairly large backhoe to dig out a major portion of his property so close to a slope. This individual has posted signs that claim the trail your city maintains is closed to the public. He has also destroyed a potion of the trail that many people in the city loved, used and enjoyed. I as well as thousands of trail users would appreciate it if you could please send an inspector to this individuals construction site and inspect his operation, I truly believe both he and his neighbor have crossed their property lines and have claimed public land for their own.

Pakiha.....my friend at the City asked that you please remove the the residents addresses from any and all posts....the wall(s) they are building are on their property and unfortunately for us we may lose the use of that upper singletrack if there isn't enough room once the wall is completed...and that EVERYONE stop sending emails to the City officials....they are aware of the situation and are working on it...

The Back Hoes are on another section of the loop(from what I have been told) that is owned by the RailRoad and the Railroad grants permission to the City of Fullerton and the public to use those trails...the City of Fullerton Maintance Dept is going to work w/ the RailRoad to reroute the trail for public use(including mountain biking)....I was also asked(well actually told) to NOT contact the RailRoad and complain b/c they will just kill it and say SORRY to bad the trail is closed for good...they do not want to be bothered w/ anyone emailing them or contacting them about these issues...it will only do more harm than good....

BTW I will be on the 645 ride tomorrow (White Heckler) and will be able to see for myself what sections are blocked and will make sure that the City is refering to the same spots as we are talking about....

Once the wall(s) is built we "MAY" be able to rebuild that portion of the trail so we can still ride the high ST...

Apparently the home owners are moving their fence's to their true property for 2 reasons...1)extra land sq footage=$$$$ and 2) they are tired of people hiking, riding, hanging out smoking making noise behind their houses at all hours of the day and night...it's not directly targeted at mtn bikers...there are some others who are ruining it for everyone...we are the ones who are feeling this loss teh most b/c riding on that fire road SUCKS

This is just me, But that trail has been used for YEARS. there is a law stating (and any legal person out there correct me if I am wrong) that once a certain bit of land has been used for "X" years by the public, it becomes public domain, and even if it is your property you cannot reclaim it. This happened with my old boss and his gas station, and some beach communities trying to restrict beach access.

I figured we could build an environmentally protective and friendly Ladder that makes minimal contact with the existing slope, and throw in some rollers to discourage that negligible foot traffic they were actually complaining about.

Yes, this is a smart a$$ comment.

Your statements are correct, but this trail is not required to access anywhere (like the beach or the Yorba Linda area mentioned above. Also, I believe the formally recognized trail does not go up behind the houses, but instead uses the old railway (that has been gone for quite some time - did anyone know that was a railway that went all the way down past the courthouse?)

On kind of a related issue, the city is fighting in on another area of the loop, although it may already have been resolved. I'm referring to that open area near the top of the first hill on the loop that appears to be a vacant lot. One of the neighbors has been trying to claim it (even though it was never his).

But I'm kind of there with ya!

I'll see what this is about on Thursday, but I'm sure we can create something interesting out of the natural terrain.

Gone....

In defense of the city here is the email they sent to me, they are working very hard to do things on the up and up and I'll geive them credit for that.

The work being done on the trail is legit. The wall being constructed behind ###, is properly placed within the surveyed property line, is being built pursuant an engineered retaining wall design, and has the proper permits. The contractor did place a “trail closed” sign at the base of the slope, in an abundance of caution for safety reasons. The sign has been removed, and this afternoon the property line will be staked by the surveyor, and a temporary barrier installed. This is another example of private property adjacent to a trail being used by the public, and considered to be part of the city right of way by the users.

Good job to the city for the quick response and wise advise to us. I'm sure that after the new wall is finished we (?) will be able to stabilize the leftover trail ( no one wants errosion to undermine the new wall ) and continue our special little single track. We could even copy some of the other neighbors and put in a small ornamental bench at the top for Dino to rest on.

My friend and I have discussed this one at length...the property owner claims vandals are the reason she wants it for her property and cut off to public access....

THIS WON"T happen the CITY will NEVER give the property owner that land...

Lets remove the ramp from SJT and use the material to upgrade the this section of the Loop

No Longer A Lurker

Default New Fenceline on Fullerton Loop Railway Upper Singletrack

It looks like the trail may be about 2 feet wide when it's done, but will feel narrower as we'll be riding next to a wall. See pictures for where this section starts, and the view as of today.
There are also many uncapped steel stakes, which can be a strong hazard with all of the changes.

After the Railway Bridge, the drop to the left was blocked at the base by several loads of gravel right in the middle of the most-used line. Work was in progress on the rail line mid-way to the Harbor Blvd bridge, hopefully the gravel will be moved by nightfall.
