Default question re: using kids bike trailer

Just started taking my boy on some shorts rides in bike trailer on a dirt bike path. i had been leaving the "screen" up as he doesn't seem to dig when it down, but noticed after ride my kid was covered in sand (bad dad ).

Running fat (2.5 DH) tires on bike so am sure kicking up some more stuff than less aggressive tires.

So question is are you guys keeping screen down and has it helped on dirt trails. there are 2 screen on this trailer (plastic and mesh). am sure plastic would work but think he'll get to hot? assume mesh shouldnt be hot but does it block the dirt? if so I guess he'll have to get used to it. He seems to like going for ride, but rather not have to pick sand out of his teeth after each ride obvioulsy can try next ride but just looking for some feedback from those who have used more frequently than i.

just tell me i'm not stuck keeping it to paved roads

Thanks

drop that screen. some have a plastic screen and some have mesh, im sure the mesh will help but not sand-proof. or maybe get a window

We always ride the Fullerton Loop with our son in the Burley, with the screen down at the very least. If it's cooler, we use the plastic "window" as well. Remember that if you are off-road, it's not only the sand but any rocks or other potential debris you need to consider. Hope this helps.

Same here, I keep the mesh down at a minimum. Lately I have been putting the plastic down in the front but keeping the back plastic screen rolled up so he gets a good amount of air flow. ( I have a burley d'lux too btw)

I haven't taken my trailer off road (I think I have the D'lite. It seats two.) yet, so when I ride with the trailer I use the commuter because it has fenders. I guess if I took them off-road I'd use the plastic. But, obviously there's limits when you have the trailer and a kid in it. My daughter Stella likes to talk to me when I'm riding. And, it's either too loud to hear (traffic, wind in ears) or I'm climbing and can't talk. Drives me crazy.

Glad to see you're getting out and riding. Anyway, I keep the plastic screen down. My son doesn't seem to get hot.

I should get Stella a wireless headset or something. Then she can just chat away! Otherwise I'm always stopping to find out what she wants.

That communicator's like $110! That's kind of a lot, to me. But, then, on the other hand, I wouldn't have to stop all the time or holler "What?! What?!" constantly.

Do you ride the whole loop with the kids in the trailer? Anything you don't do maybe certain singletrack areas?

I'm thinking about doing this, but what is the best bike trailer to take off road? Is it better to have a toddler's carrier connected to your bike? Does anyone have pictures of this and recommendations?

Thanks!
