Default Fire near Cannell

I took these pics from my front yard last night. The whole hillside above Kernville was on fire. The fire has since went down the back of the mountain and is heading up towards the Plunge. Today they had several bombers and helicopters working the flames but no containment yet. This is real early for a fire this big. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

It is going to be a long fire season. When I was in Arizona last week they are aready talking about forest closures on Mt. Elden.

Thanks, Jeff. Please keep us updated as to how high it goes.

Rangers at Lytle Creek were telling us the same thing. They told us even if we got a lot of rain in April and May it still might not be enough. It's a good time to own a road bike. But man, am I going to miss riding up there.

Default closures

I have never seen a trail closure up here due to fire danger. Our trails should be open all summer. I guess there could always be a first time but I haven't heard anything like that yet.

Did for me about 5 years ago, had to cancel our trip.

So.... How's everybody doing?
I'm in a new job so although I'm extremely busy, think I can make a weekend plunge trip... What's the plan?

Eric do you still have the same email? I'll give you the heads up as soon as we get it planned.

Jeff, those are some strangely beautiful photos. Hard to reconcile that with the destruction. Glad the front has moved away from your home, at least.

Been some talk of a possible June Plunge run around here lately, and many will be anxiously awaiting word of the area's fate. Keep us posted if you get the chance.

As for fire season seemingly starting early, I'd say we better get used to it. This may just be an off year for rainfall/snow pack, but sounds like we're trending towards longer, hotter Summers and shorter, colder Winters.

Default update

This morning the local news said that the fire was 50% contained. When I drove home from work this afternoon there was almost no smoke. It looks like they have a good handle on it and it has not made it up to where the trail is.
Dell, the pictures don't even begin to do the actual scene justice. On sunday night the whole mountain was lit up. It was spectacular. The bombers were dropping retardent in the afternoon and we could see it all from our yard. My son and I watched it for hours. These huge planes were making these incredible moves. There were several times when I was sure they were going to hit the mountain but they were always able to pull out of it.
The fire was on the other side of the river so we were not really in any danger. That made watching it a lot more enjoyable.
The rode should be open soon. When I hear that it is open I will post. Any time in June should be good except the 8th-10th because I am out of town that weekend. It would be a real bummer to miss you guys.

Justin and I are heading up with another couple, and possibly a few others June 22-23.

The 8-10th we'll be in Downieville!
