finally got around to taking some quick pics before the maiden voyage
![]() ![]() build specs are: old school LX square taper cranks (sun ringle 32T chain ring, 44T is coming off) endless 19T cog paul melvin tensioner un54 BB old WTB laserdisc lite wheelset (2.35 rampage /2.1 nevegal dtc) Hope Mono M4 180/Mono Mini 160mm brakes Thomson 90mm x10* stem origin8 space bar (mary copy that is actually lighter!) ESI grips (so nice!) king headset ![]() wtb pure v saddle stock seat post salsa seat post binder marz marathon xc fork (set around 95mm) so far it rides pretty dang good .. i have to get used to riding with clips again but it helped big time on the climb today. i might go to a bigger rear cog since mustard straight owned me.. gotta pick up a bash guard and maybe a longer seat post since i can't get to full climbing height with the current saddle. i must say that its nice to have a more xc bike to ride around for the easier or more scenic trails. people were wishing me luck once they saw i was riding an ss... whats really weird for me was that i was passing people climbing up mustard! for those that have ridden with me, i'm usually one of the last ones up anyhow i picked up the frame from nashbar for $27 and built it with mostly leftover parts and parts i've bought from adrenaline and the path. for how cheap it was, i would be dumb to not buy it and build up a semi blinged out ss..wonder if i should get something with bigger wheels now ![]()

Dood, nice ride. Lemme think....where have I seen a bike like that before??
![]() Oh yeah - in Whiting at the base of Mustard Rd this evening around 6:30! I was the guy on the Turner, and my friend on the Reign just started posting here as "LoisMustDie." He claims it's a Family Guy reference, but I have my suspicions. Anyway, we both live in the area and ride Whiting often, so anytime you wanna connect for a loop, say the word....except I won't be able to keep up on the climbs if you're on that single! (Lois will if he's on his Mary. What an odd sentence that was) Congrats on the bike. It has a big-time funky cool factor, and your "smiles per dollar ratio" blows away pretty much everyone else out there. See you on the trail. ![]()

I very nearly grabbed a hunk of cholla on SageScrub myself. Took a lot of body english to avoid the spines.
Cool talking to you. It was funny, cause for a second I thought about asking if by chance you ever visited this site. Guess I need to sport some STR gear to make the process easier. Thursday nights in Whiting are pretty common for us, so anytime you want to hook up, say the word. Unfortunately, I have some work commitments over the next few weeks that may shift my riding times around, but I'm sure we can manage something. Congrats again on that bike. That was the first single I've seen that honestly made me think "Yeah, maybe I should put something like that together." ![]()

Nice Nam! So when are we going to do a SS rookie ride now that there's a few of us who just built one recently. My Rocky Mountain XC hardtail is also done. I'll post pics soon. Congrats on the new ride. It's sweet!

What RM hardtail do you have? I was thinking about converting my RM Blizzard to SS.

carl, so far i like it a lot except i wish it was a tad bit wider.. i picked it up at the path for like $25, bout half the cost of the mary bars. i normally hit up whiting around 6pm, after work for me.

Also Nam, with all that sweep, did you have to go to a longer stem? Last edited by Pho'dUp : 04-27-2007 at 08:06 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

carl, on one designed the bars with that big forward curve to negate the need for a longer stem. i believe the bars you need a longer stem with are the jones h bar.
rodel, you're welcome to try my pos out if ya like...its nice not having to worry about shifting and what gear to get in. The bike really takes off once you start pedaling, its a good time. in other news, i kinda need to get the fork serviced so the tst cartridge works, but its currently stuck in the full open compression setting so i don't mind it really.

Hey Carl - didn't know that was you on here until LoisMustDie mentioned it a couple days ago. If you go for those Mary/Gary bars and need a stem, or if anyone else needs it, I have an extra Race Face Deus 110mm for cheap. If that's not long enough, I think I've seen Bike Co and Performance both with some bargain bin deals on 130-140mm stems, and Performance in Laguna Niguel had all their Race Face stems on sale for $50 when I was in there a few days ago.
Sounds like a regular Thursday night Whiting STR group ride is in the works - heck, it's already happening, we just don't know it!

Nice bike Nam, one of these days I'm gonna get around to building up my Cove into a SS
