Default pedal advice

I am looking to purchase some platform clip-in pedals. Looking for suggestions I want to overcome my phobia of being "clipped in" perhaps the platform part will give me that perceived sense of security...any suggestions what to buy? I have a pair of one time only used Crank Bros Candy Sl's if anyone is in the market...
Thanks!
Lynn

I like the Shimano PD-545s and the 55 cleats(multi-release and a bit more float)

Why no love for the Candys?

Probably too small for her.... I know when I started with clipless, I had some old 646's and would unclip in the sketchy areas, use the platform, and then clip back in once I was on safer ground....

you are so right. There's no back up if I can't clip in. At least with a larger plaform I'm hoping I can get through sketchy sections in a pinch... Had a less than pleasant experience the first time I tried them on anything technical...I could work up to the candy's once the clipping in and out part is instinctive.

What else is nice about the shimanos is you can run them loose or tighter depending on your preference..... If I recall correctly, the candys tension in the pedal is non adjustable...

Yeah, but the engagment/release is so easy on Crank Bros. pedals--compared to any other clipless i've ever ridden, save for maybe Speedplay Frogs--that having a larger platform to stand on shouldn't be an issue. And unless you ride with a skate-style SPD-compatible shoe (soft sole) rather than a traditional XC MTB shoe (rock-hard sole), havinglarger platforms to stand on unclipped doesn't make much of a difference, cuz you're gonna slip and slide all over your pedals no matter how large the platform. At least that's my experience.

u saw my petals right? go get em!! they rock!! +++ CrankBrothers - 2006 +++

these petals unclip sooo much better than the smarties ever did!! The smaller (than the mullet) platform really helps to support and dont get in the way of the rocks as much!!

these ones will fit your bike like a glove!!

I actually do have a shoe that's more of a skate type, it's tough to "hike" up really technical sections that are still a little over my head in the traditional shoes, been there done that!

In that case, try Crank Bros. Mallets. Same release/engagement as the Candys, but with a much bigger platform. I haven't ridden Shimano-style pedals in many years cuz i found them to be death traps even with tension adjusted all the way out, but those cleats that Neccros mentioned sound promising. Good luck, and I hope you find a good solution.

Shimano has discontinued that pedal, but they can probably still be found.

On the other hand, you can save about a 100 grams (if I can remember correctly) and get a similar pedal with a nylon cage with the Shimano PD-M424. These also typically cost a bit less, too.
SHIMANO PD-M424 CLIPLESS PEDAL at JensonUSA.com

I've used these on DH, slamming them into rocks, and it's amazing what kind of abuse they can take.

Also, the 55 multi-release cleats have also been discontinued for quite some time, but you can get the SM-SH56 model multi-release cleats.

I have a pair of previously loved Shimano DX pedals, their meant for DH but the platform helped me get over my no clip anxiety. I also have a pair of cleats for them as well. If you want lets work out a trade for your Candy's. Although to be completly honest, after about 10 rides, you'll want your Candy's back (I got a pair after I got used to clipping, ie: I hit an Oh Shirt! spot on the trail unclipped held momentum and reclipped sub conciously. then thought HEY! did I just do that! ). If you want to borrow them thats fine with me too, they're just sitting right now

Let me know

Thanks Pakiha, that's very geneous of you to offer. After just a few responses I think you are right, once I get the hang of it I might actually want to use the Candy's. I know 99% of this is a mental hurdle. I'm already riding 100% more technical stuff than I did a year ago when I last tried to use those pedals.

Yeah, for a true plat form combo stick with the Shimanos. The 525's have a true platform even though they're a little heavier, they also have the 424 pedal that is cleated on both sides, but has a resin platform all the way around. And like Neccros said, the multi-release cleats and the pedal adjustment all the way out, you'll unclip faster than crank bros.' or Time's unadjustable release settings.

Ah...I thought those were red and white! Most of you who probably still have a set of these somewhere (like me) know what I mean. They're good pedals.

got an old pair of these as well (all silver). Like'd em but changed over to frogs years ago (no platform). Never used them for "hotspot" issues but when i first started riding gave a bit more confidence on gnar if i elected to clip out and float on pedal. btw- certainly not the lightest pedals around

I don't think I used mine past the white. For some dumb reason, I retired them early for a set of 535 non-platform pedals, which I will now no longer use. I've been happy with 545/424 models. Didn't like the the crank bros pedals, but I can't remember why.
