There are 2 different Spec Epic to consider.
1) the old type with Fox manufactured "Brain" 2) the Spec, maunfactured "Brian" There is quite a difference between the two. Tin's bike is a classic race bike and is super sweet, but I'd be leery about putting his bike under a 200 pound plus rider. Might be okay, but a bike that weighs in under 25 pounds just seems better suited to the lighter riders. The old Epic's had a lot of complaints, but it seems they have worked out the bugs when they started making their own shocks. These are realitively new, so how well they'll stand up remains to be seen. I'd consider one of these myself. But I like to ride nothing but the best, so of course I ride a Turner!

Most local bike shops (LBS) will rent bikes out for a weekend for a fee (around $50). I would try one out and see what you think and also try out some others. Some LBS will put the rental money towards the bike you want to buy, mine did. So rent from a shop that you would want to buy from.

I have the 2007 edition of the Stumperjumper FSR and I really like it. I think the Brain works well. The bike climbs as well or even a little better than my hardtail. I keep the brain set on the firmer side of things since I am 6'3" and 225 lbs, so on some of the really small rocks (pebbles, really), I can feel it, but on anything of note, it is pretty plush.

Hey guys, looks like I'm going up again this Saturday. This time with an Ellsworth Epiphany. (I'm one spoiled mofo!!!).
Next up might be a Turner 5 Spot, if I can find one to demo. And then a Kona Coil air or something. Thanks for all the advice in this thread. I look forward to contributing more once I figure out wtf I'm doing ! ![]() |
