Default One saddle for road and mtn?

Yo - So I've been in dire need of new saddles for both my road bike and mtn bike (more so the road bike). I've been getting a touch numb if I sit and climb for a long time. So last night I picked up a specialized "Alias", which fits nicely. I'll pick something up shortly for the mtn bike too, maybe a WTB like what came with the bike. But there's another option....

The dude at my LBS, said that if I find a good road saddle I like, I should consider buying a second one for the mtn bike. He either really drank the Specialized Kool-Aid, or he knows what he's talking about (I think both). I guess, the reasoning being that if a saddle performs well on long road rides, it should do just as well on the mtn bike (and this is XC, all mountain riding, not free-ride/downhill).

What do you think about that suggestion? If I dig the Alias road saddle, any reason not to get it for the trail bike?

The #'s are the lengths.

Try the saddle on your mountain bike first, would be my suggestion. But I know quite a few XC racers that use the Specialized Toupe saddle on their mountain bikes as well. I'm considering actually getting a mountain saddle for my road bike Haven't tried it yet, but I definitely need something other than the Toupe Gel. It's not really making my bits happy.

Nope, those are butt sizes (in mm). It weighs 250 grams.

Specialized some years back was the first (I guess) to design size options for their saddles. At the LBS, they had me sit on something to measure my sit bones. I guess I have a medium sized ass.

I'm afraid to ask how they measured your sit bones

Yeah, it was Cynergy. There's a little room out back with incense, candles and Enya playing where they measure your butt. They were gentle.

I ride the Specialized Alias 130 on my FS for a few years now and totally dig it. Never had any issues of comfort on epic rides. Don't believe specialized markets as only road saddle can be used for mtn as well

Ride similar shaped (narrow) Selle/San Marco (think ASP) on my HT and no issues there as well. do belive that is considered a road saddle

I rode Selle Italia Ti Flite seats on both bikes for a while.
Very comfy. I still ride one on the road bike and I will probably switch back when I get rid of my WTB torture device.

Both of my bikes (road and Mtb) are by Specialized. I drank the Kool-Aid. It was red, like my bikes. Anyway, I like the saddles. I have an Avatar on the road bike. Light, comfy. On the mtb is a Rival. Also seems to be pretty comfortable.

I, for one, can't see why you couldn't have the same saddle on two bikes. If it's comfortable, do it. It might be that mtb saddles, though, are a little beefier to put up with the extra abuse that off-roading can dish out. My guess.

Missed this thread first time around.
Q: Don't road saddles tend to be flatter from front to back, as opposed to the dropped noses on many mtb saddles for climbing comfort? I'd think if I was gonna pick one saddle for both, it'd be an mtb model.
