PORKCHOP SANDWICHES!

Default yet another SS build.

so, i decided to group all my parts and build a SS. ive got it all except the frame, and its scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday.
specs:
nashbar steel frame
powertools hubs and bars
ditch witch hoops
ritchey stem
shimano brakes (v brake, yeaaah)
WTB tires/grips
truvativ cranks with bashgaurd
probably clipless pedals
manitou 5" fork, or rigid cro-mo (what do you guys think i should do!?)
saweet bontrager cage and maxxis water bottle (both free)
and anything else in that pic im forgetting.

i gathered a truckload of spacers/sprockets from my LBS, deal was if i found them i could have them, so ive only got the money of the frame invested thus far. (like 50.00) as far as the tensioner goes, ive got 2 old derailers, i will either just use one as a tensioner left untouched, or ill use the pulleys/springs and make my own out of some scrap aluminum. any of you veteran SS'ers have suggestions? what about gear ratio? my front is a 32 and ive got a 16, and 18, and a 19 tooth rear collected. suggestions are welcome. thanks for lookin.

You can never have enough tires.

I'm partial to a 32:20 ratio myself, but most guys are around a 32:18 or a 2 to 1.

perhaps ill go 32:19 and split the difference. like to start easy, but 32:24 will get me laughed off the trail... haha.

who cares what gear you ride.....screw what people think. i know plenty of single speeders who ride a tall gear just so they say they can....and end up walking too much; what is the point to that I say? nothing wrong with 32:24 if it werx for you

agreed. probably go with 32:20. i just rode the c-dale up my very steep street with that ratio. should be decent for the trails i ride.

let me know how that frame is ryan i'm just about going to order one up. what size did you get? from what i've read on mtbr, the size 19 has a 23" TT which is what i normally ride, but i'm unsure if i want to get that or maybe one step smaller in frame size. 32:17 is the gearing you can run so you don't have to run a tensioner on that frame.

I just started riding a SS not too long ago. Sometime after the St Patty's/BMR ride at the luge. I started with 32:22 which was great on climbs but was way too easy on the flats. On a trail like Wood Canyon at Aliso which you are familar with, I was spinning too hard just to go 12 mph! I've switched to 32:18 and it works for now. I'm still a geary at heart cause I'm build a Rocky Mountain hardtail. Good luck with the your build and take pics.

I think the 5" fork will chopper the bike, and if you use it I hope it has a lock-out. I'd start with the rigid fork and concentrate on climbing well.

Default SS is DONE!

I received the frame this morning, pieced it together off and on while studying for anthropology.

full rigid, 32/18 gearing, weighed in @ 26.4 lbs. my original tensioner did not end up working out, plus it was spring loaded ( i figure it would spring enough to let the chain off.). i figured id be better off making a fixed one, so i did. works super ill, but i will be drilling the frame and tapping the tensioner once i finalize the ratio and chain so its even more fixed. I rode it about 5 miles tonight up the local fire road, no gears are a definite change, ill definitely be working harder! quite a bit of slack in the chain, so i ordered a 3/32 half link to help out, ill put it on when i get it. now the pics!

Must be nice to have a King headset lying around. If that's what you've got, use it. Would have gone nicely on my Rocky Mtn though.
