Thanks for that post. The key is to remember that it doesn't matter what your intentions are or if you're doing stunts or not: We just don't have control over when the fickle finger of fate is gonna point our way. Sometimes the worst crashes can be right outside your own doorstep, or when you're only going 3mph.

In the last couple days I've seen several future organ donors riding without helmets. Not coincidentally, they're also the ones riding the wrong way on one-way trails, or riding three wide along twisty bits of canyon roads. It's natural selection at its finest. I just wish I could designate my tax dollars so as not to support their trips to the county ER.

I've seen two people whose lifes were saved by wearing a helmet. I was there to see it. One was my son and the other was my ex-boss.

Some of my roadie friends ride without helmets. I can't believe they continue to do this knowing the consequences.

I have crashed three times and Bell has sent me these "Saved By The Bell" Certificates. OTB each time and cracked the helmet. I always tell people on a ride that I want them to go buy a helmet when they get home just b/c of that reason!

I spent a day at High Hopes a rehabilitation facility for people with head injuries most of them resulted from drug and alchol accidents. After a day there you relize how lucky we are to be able to have the fun we do as well as how neccesary it is to wear a helmet. There was a girl there who was riding her bike drunk on super bowl sunday quite a few years ago and passed out while cruising down the sidewalk she hit her head so bad she was in a coma for months and has taken 12 years of recovery to get as far as she has. She has been left perminatly disabled. The other stories there are just as gnarly. If you meet someone on the trail or road with no helmet suggest they go volunteer there just for a day. It made me look back at the times I didn't wear a helmet and thank god for keeping me safe.

Default yikes!!!

that guy got smashed. i used to not wear a helmet when i rode park/street, but since i got an XC bike a few years ago, i never ride on 2 wheels wothout one, or in 4 wheels for that matter. i was on a call in riverside, 4 year old male fell off his bike in his front yard, onto the sidewalk. we arrived and he had blood collecting behind his ears (sorry, i forget the tec. term) and fluid from the ear, he died a few days later. very sad, didnt have to happen. ALWAYS WEAR ONE. even in the shower, you might slip and fall., ltmq.

I saw a guy on my local loop Friday not wearing a helmet. He was also wearing sandals and this particular trail has lots of rocks and roots. High probability for a crash or "hamburger toes" at the very least. He was on an Ellsworth Truth too, so you would think he knows a little about MTB'ing and would know better.

What cracks me up is the parents riding with their children. The kids have a helmet on but the parents don't. What a joke. I always wear a helmet. My father died (on a motorcycle) sans helmet.

About two weeks ago, We did a Shuttle run from the Mt. Baldy fireroad to Marshall Canyons. A couple day before the ride, we experienced very high wind in the area. So what happened on the the ride was on the way down , near the end of the trail where the fireroad dumps you into a private residential area, there was a dried dead tree that was blown over during the high wind day. My friend was bombing down the fireroad and through the turn and Wham, into the down tree. Man, he was stuck in between the branches. One of the branch puncture the helmet. Left the plastic outter cover embedded in the foam. If it wasnt for the helmet, he woulda had a hole the size of a pinky in his noggin. The funny thing is that before the ride, he said that the helmet is old and its time for a new one. Well, we left the plastic helmet shell on the tree to let others know that someone got hurt there. Good thing he rode out with a couple of scratches on the face and arm.

Sounds like a very good endorsement for eye protection too...and maybe body armor. Glad your friend got off so lightly.
