The Real Slim Shady

For whatever reason, my next bike will likely be an old skool single speed such that v-brakes or cantilever out back (and dont want to run disc adapters....they are whey ghey).
My boy Upchuck run this combo and will be asking his opinion but wondering if others have experience....v brakes front / rear is fine with me to be honest, but i may do disc front instead...not sure |

hey man...sorry i didn't return your call. i only had a chance for a short ride this past sun. had to be back home by 9:30am. i'll give you a ring tomorrow.
i love running a v in the rear on my ss, probably the best set up for me. i am running a crappy marta up front (about to go in the garbage can) and an avid ultimate in the rear. my rear dropouts are the paul comps with axle keepers. the dropouts have nice, long flats....for huge gear ratio adjustments. i think i can run 32x18-22 without adding a chain link!!! i didn't like the eBB thing since it changed my crank position with gearing changes. the slider thing looks good to me, but there are alot of bolts. with the horz drops, i can switch from 32x18 fixed to 32x20 ss without any changes to bikemeterics. that said, i am am either going paragon slider or a horz drop with der hanger (some what like the droputs on the karate monkey) on my "monster cross" project. i personally think you will not miss having a disc in the rear. my first 29er ss was v-brale only front and rear....i switched to a disc up front and was pretty happy. sold that bike when the ti bug bite me....never should have sold that beaut. i am running paul cantis on my cross bike (i am riding this bike ALOT as of late)....neo retro up front, touring in the rear....very finicky to set up. stick to a v-brake dude.

I used to run disc up front and v in the back on my old school AMP Research B4. If bike weight is balanced (should be on a SS), it's a good blend as long as you have a disc hub............
I currently run v's on my SS......no disc hub

I am so sick of the whole 29er scene I wanted to try something new (to me anyway). I started by just searching for something to replace my Inbred 29er I got rid of like an idiot.....pretty much consdiering anything in the not too expensive range and really wanted a 26er SS.....and with the opportunity to do vintage on top of it, I dont think I can pass it up nor do I want to. this bike will be old skool if i get it....I actually sent you pics. |

Erik, I'm sure you'll love the feel of a disc/V setup. I'm running Avid Ti Single Digit in the back. IMO, probably the best V to combine with a disc since it has great power and modulation.
You could always come over to the house and take my Fat out for a spin. As long as you don't mind riding a bike that's meant for someone 5" shorter than you! BTW, I just took my first spill in I don't know how long. I was railing on Los Padres on the Fat and ZZZZZZZIP! The wheels slid right out from under me on a loose turn. Major hamburger job on my forearm. Had to cut off some hanging flesh before I bandaged it up. Wife almost tossed her cookies while helping me. Oy, I'm currently looking at the Paul Neo Retro's for a vintage SS build. Are they really that difficult to set up? How about once they're adjusted? Do they require constant attention? hey UpChuck...
the pauls have stayed the way i have adjusted them. i have 3 rides with 100 miles and roughly 10,000 ft of climbing and decents (road, fireroad and st descents). the initial set up was abit finicky, it just seems like you need one more hand. i ground down the pads to get rid of the rim cleaning edge off (remember, cx'ers use these brakes). i could not get the rear tire drag free without getting rid of that part of the pad. i like to have my brakes contact the rim early in braking...it seems easier to "feather" my brakes with the pads close to the rim. ii had a hard time trying to achieve this cantis do require a bit more work to set. i have tried the cane creeks and some avid 4s, the pauls are leaps and mounds better in every way. the front neo-retro seemed easier to work with. also, remember to get canti comp. levers. and , extra wide salsa cable straddle and interloc long drop hanger are things i love as well. they work well up front. oh....take care of that forearm. cheers!

![]() the long drop cable hanger is abit pricey, $30. it gives some clean lines though....and helps the front brake feel smoother. also, the 50mm salsa straddle will help with tire clearance probs. and, helps with modulation. i am using both the interloc long drop hanger and a slasa carrier up front. in the rear, i am using some cheapy dia-compe that is no where near as wide as the 50mm salsa. hope this helps.

You are absolutely correct, Mike. Gravel holes they are. Today I discovered I've pulled a groin muscle (must have went into the splits) and have a bruised hip and shoulder. My grip isn't so good either.
Thank god I have experience with wound care. Saved me a trip to the doc. I'm going to tell you the same thing I told my son when he asked me that question. "Cryin's for b!tches, son. Are you callin' me a b!tch?!" ![]() Last edited by Upchuck; 03-31-2007 at 10:16 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
