I've taken my bike on a plane probably 6 or 7 times, and have experienced a lot of different things. Overall, I've found Alaska to be the easiest to deal with. They normally have charged me $25 each way for the bike, and never complained about the size or weight of the box, even with a DH bike, Camelback full of tools, and armor stuffed in the box too! Not sure what kind of bike you're taking, but try to find someone with a hard case to borrow, it'll make it a lot easier and safer than cardboard.

take off wheels, handlebar, and seatpost, and puit it in a box and thats basically it. depending on the size of the box, you may be able to leave the back tire on.

I currently work for USAIRWAYS as an aircraft mechanic at John Wayne Airport as well as United Airlines(currently on layoff). Most airlines have bike boxes and will charge you for it. It will go as an oversize. Call which airline you are flying with using the 1 800 # and ask for the local baggage service office(BSO) phone #. If your flying out of ONT(just a guess), call the airport directory and they'll give you Delta's BSO at ONT. They will be able to tell you everything you need to know, (cost and size). Good luck!

When I moved down to CA (quite a few years ago) I called a local lbs and got a free bike box pack it up (see the following links for instructions/ideas: #1 - pdf, and #2 - pretty detailed). Worked out pretty well, don't forget to pack up tools, duct tape, etc to put the bike together and repack again.
Question I have, is there anything worth riding in FLA? PS: I believe I used an article from bicycling magazine all those years ago to pack up, see one from them here. |

not sure if they still have it but IMBA used to have a deal with certain airlines to ship bike for free (for members). think u have to book through a special number. costs may be buried and maybe you can get better deal just paying surcharge as some list above but just passing on info

I think the IMBA deal ended. There is a podcast called "The Fredcast" that had an episode about traveling with your bike via airplane. Check it out.

I take my Spesh SJ back to the UK every summer and use a padded bike bag (they arent expensive). I take off wheels, rotors, cranks, seat post, stem and wrap the tubing in pipe insulation. Make sure you also remove the rear mech as its vulnerable.
DOnt even think about not taking the cranks off - the airport staff will drop the bag and those outer chain teeth will bend - it happened on the one occasion I didnt take them off. Hope this helps.
