Default So Ive joined the dark side...

Thats right Im gonna build up a SS bike. I picked up a Trek HT and stripped down to the frame. Frame is beautiful! Weight comes at about 6lbs. Gonna be gathering some parts for a SS build. Right now im gonna go for budget parts so Im gonna stick with the POS wheels and go with V's. Any good suggestions for a good SS crank. I was thinking about going with LX crank with a bash guard on it.

Rigid or suspension?

If anyone has any SS parts they dont need, ill be glad to take it off your hands.

I don't have a SS but I think it's a must if you do go with a front suspension to get one with a lock-out. You're gonna be standing up on a lot of the climbs. I personally would not go fully rigid, but there are a lot of folks out there who dig it that way. Happy building!

Good luck on the budget parts build...I have never been able to do it. Right FO!

To me the goal is to get a SS as light as posible.

indeed.....i sorely miss my light weight One 9.

I really like my mid-weight Ventana single speed with suspension fork for all around riding but when it comes to climbs, there is simply no comparison.

I am in the market for a new fully rigid bike as I just got a promotion and need to milk the fact to get another bike I dont need. Seriously though, considering something like a throw together ~$1000 single speed 26er or perhaps a complete Kona Unit 2-9, Raleigh XXIX, or something like that....even considering the brand new inbred 29er about to be released.....just shopping right now.

my conditioning is pathetic....work has been so bad that my riding average is about 1-2 per month if i am lucky, but it aint cancer at least.

cheers

Shimano LXs are fine. I use some old Octalinks with no problems. You can save some weight and skip the bash guard. Just use some singlespeed bolts ($5).

Have fun and post some pics as you build it up.

Whats the different between SS bolts and reg chainring bolts?

they are not as long. With only one ring and the spyder, they normal bolts will be too long.

I've got a SS wheelset, that came with my bike, lying around unused. I'll post pics of the wheels when I get the chance. So here's the sales pitch
  • Powertools hubs (never heard of this mfgr before but the performance is good enough)
  • Sun Rims CR18 rim. 32 spoke (front & rear)
  • Front wheel: V brake & 6-bolt disk compatible
  • Rear wheel: V brake only. Requires bmx style freewheel. 18 tooth Shimano freewheel already installed.
  • QR skewers included
Similiar products sell for up to $100 to $200 bucks. But act now and you can have this wheelset for one easy payment of $40. ...And that's not all, I'll also include
  • Park FR-6 freewheel removal tool
  • 16 tooth Shimano freewheel
Call now 1-800-555-5555 or PM me, act now...supplies are limited!

The difference between a SS chain ring bolts vs regular chain ring bolt is that the SS chain ring bolts are a bit shorter than the regular ones. A SS bolt is just long enough to fit the chainring spider + middle ring. A regular bolt needs to be long enouch for the chainring spider + big ring + middle ring.

I just coverted my Giant XTC hardtail into a SS. Before I converted it, it hung in the garage cause I always rode my F/S. Now that it's a SS, I ride it just as much. I started with 32:22, but was way too easy, it seemed at times I was spinning in place. Andy aka rut suggested I go 32:20 at least, but I've gone 32:18 and love it! I'm holding on to all my 9 spd stuff cause I just bought a Rocky Mountain Elevation on ebay(hardtail) that I want to build as a CC. I'll probably have spare parts by the time I'm done with it. I have that 22t if your interested I'll post pics of the before and after shots of the XTC later.

Welcome... bring some lights because it only gets darker. At least for the first month or so-then you'll be seeing the light.

In my opinion in regards to front suspension is that it doesn't matter. If you're building it up on the cheap, get the cheapest fork you can find. You'll find pleasure in a rigid or a suspension fork. I occasionally go back and forth on my SS, but after a wrist injury last year, I'm back on the suspension fork.

Looks like a sweet frame for a budget SS buildup!

I've got a Rock Shox SID, circa 2001, that I used until about two weeks ago. It could probably use a rebuild, but it's yours if you want to come and pick it up.

Email me for details.

Let me know how it goes, trung. I have a 3700 collecting dust in my garage. Was thinking of tinkering with it somehow. SS commuter might be fun.

I have been planning to build up my old '02 Trek 4500 HT as a SS. Made the decision last week actually.

Maybe there is a disease of some kind going around
