don't worry about it and just ride. You won't get better riding with people who suck or don't push you. It will make you get stronger and have more skill.

Hey, I get dropped like a 5 dollar hand gun all the time. But I am getting in better shape and dropping a little weight.

The Path sunday rides they know some noobs will be there. That's in their best intrest too. New people coming into the sport is what's going to keep those shops going.

There's an indirect correlation of number of posts on STR with your riding ability.

NOVICE= 1000+ posts
INTERMEDIATE= 500-999 posts
EXPERT = 1-499 posts

Just sit around your computer and post as much as you can!

That's got to be the best advice I've heard in a long time.

I think we all (or at least most of us) have that story of the awful ride we went on as beginners that was unbearable due to the hammerheads leading the pace.

Rating for mountain trail rides would be different than rating road or trials skills.Each type of riding could hold its own type of criteria.

Trials formula : technical skills 85%, fitness 10%, strength 5%

Road formula: Fitness 95%, technical skills 5%

Mountain trail formula: Fitness 70% , tech skills 25%, decending (drops, jumps, speed) 5%.

A final thought- Each of us has his own background in riding and have varied skills. Ratings will only paint part of the picture. Look to ride with people doing the trails or distances you want to. Fitness/endurance will come in time. When that comes, you will find rating abilities is a minor thing.

No offense, but if you've rode enough road riding you'll find that you need a lot more then 5% technical skills. Try riding around a wet corner, standing up, leaning into the turn and hammering the pedels at over 20 mph. You think that doesn't take some technical skill?

I agree! Also, stength is higher of a need for tall grades.

It sounds as though road requires brainpower 10%. As not to do some thing stupid that will get you killed.

To The next guy , strength for trials and mountain to absorb big impacts and keep the bars out of your teeth.

Fitness gets the roadiie to the top of the steep hill.

i thought it was the lycra (not the riders skill) that kept the roadie upright in those type of conditions...baggies would create drag and pull the rider down to the pavement.

Actually, wearing lycra only means people can tell when you're upright. Boy, can they tell.

Come to think of it, I usually just rank myself against other riders by height.

Love it, in some ways it's true. I know some of my friends are arm chair mtn biker's.

Mike said it best, just go out and have fun. Have a good attitude and you'll enjoy the ride.

Here's one example of skills ratings from MMR. I think I would develop one that's much more specifically skills based.

i agree with dave. i know that my riding skills have improved alot over the past couple of years as a result of the group i ride with. without their "motivational" speeches here and there, i wouldnt be the rider i am today. we definitely push each others in different ways, whether its cleaning a steep climb, or cleaning a technical section without dabbing. im not sure where i fit in on the "ranking" ladder, but its not important to me. just go ride and have fun.
