    Default Iphone or Garmin?

I'm not an Ipod user, and if I were, I might be reluctant to have one perched on the front of my bike (well, maybe for the road bike), but this new product/app caught my eye:

Interesting for sure, but I don't know that I'd be willing to shell out that kind of dough on top of the cost of an iTouch or iPhone. I think I'd prefer to keep using my Garmin rather than putting my iPhone at risk while mounted on my handlebars. One small crash and that phone would be toast!

Garmin Edge is made for biking. Edge 305 will do heart rate & cadence. Edge 705 adds power meter through ANT interface and maps (and driving directions ...).
    iPhone not rugged, etc.

This looks like a great product for consumers that don't know better. You know better - get an edge... the 305 is cheap(er) than the 705 and is great. Barometric altimeter, which I doubt the iphone has. And Is probably more accurate. And obviously durability is a huge factor....

    Garmin.

I love my iPhone apps, but they aren't for anything more than entertainment.

I kinda think the iphone is a good backup. The Garmin is something that, well if you went otb and broke it....you'd replace it. If you went otb and landed on your phone....you'd be laying there (hopefully not too hurt) with no phone.

Garmin, all the way. More durable and meant to sustain some falls. iPhone, probably okay for the beach cruiser.

That is a good point, if you crashed hard enough to get hurt your phone might not make it either so you be stuck somewhere without a phone...

I have the Garmin 305, it's durable and it does more then I need.

The iPhone is durable under extreme conditions my wife threw mine out of the car and I retreived it very angrily. It still worked, it was thrown against a wall in my house while being directed at my skull it still worked.

Garmin for me. I've lost both my Garmin and my phone on the trails after a crash. Garmin during the VQ and the phone(1st time) on Coldwater. I could live without the Garmin and did so till I replaced it, but the phone, I felt disconnected from everyone till my replacement came in.

uuhmmm - Mike, don't think that is the 'durability' tests Apple was thinking of, and best not to post here ...

I just got mine back last night complements of the OC Sheriff and ATT's Family map - good thing this would have been my 3rd iPhone in less than a year and the hubby was not happy...

    Undeniably cool yet justifiably obscure.

But, what would have happened if it had hit your skull?
