I am normaly comfortable down into the teens. The only time I felt the cold on our ride yesterday is when we stopped. I was wearing smart wool hat and socks; heavy fleece gloves and jacket...toasty. I can dress for the cold....no excaping the heat except staying on the coast. Then I trade-in my bike for a beach chair.

I think that where we grew up has alot to do with what temps we prefer. I grew up on the coast in Mendocino County...near Gualala/Anchor Bay. Although the temps don't get that cold, the wind, rain and fog makes it felt mighty cold. If you have ever been to San Francisco during the summer and had the fog come in you know what I mean.
Matt, in AZ. this summer you will get use to getting up pre dawn to ride. It can still be 100 at midnight. Or end up riding Flagstaff on the weekends. Besides Flagstaff has every thing So-Mo has and more.

I prefer colder temps. I really like mid-60s. I went for a short ride doing loops around the Rose Bowl yesterday afternoon (yes on my ROAD bike
). It was windy and cold, too cold. My toes were supper numb by the end of my hour ride.Dean I didn't know you grew up up there. That area of CA is one of my favorite. My wife and I took a short honeymoon spending one night in Mendocino and two in a B&B north of Fort Bragg where the 1 heads in land, before taking our real honeymoon in St. John. This past summer we stayed in Inverness for our anniversary. Both great places. I have not seen the stretch where Anchor Bay is located yet.

I've found the optimum temperature is about 20 degrees different for (flat) road vs MTB riding. 50-70 for MTB and 70-90 for flat road riding. Of course, the 90 degrees gets hot on hills or when you stop...

With the absolute freezing weather lately, I think I've decided the ultimate riding weather is about 65. Maybe 60 if there's a lot of climbing involved.
Also, cold wind sucks. We rode last night and it was fine on the hills at about 1800-2000 ft, but down around 1400 ft, man, it was chilly. Back in the car I saw it was 32 in the valleys. |

It amazes me the number of people here that dont ride when its cold. The cold merely makes you appreciate the warmer weather more - you socal lot are so spoilt with this climate.

last sunday we rode SART in 35-40 degree temps. I'd have to say it was well worth it. We made the first and only tracks in 1 - 3 inches of snow! It was truely a winter wonderland. I've ridden this trail MANY times but this had to be one of the best. I'll let you know how much I like the cold after my 7 am 40 degree temp ride tomorrow...
