Question Anyone use Crank Bros Candy's?

I've been eye-balling some Crank Bros Candy's to throw on my new ride and wanted to get some opinions on them for those who have used them. I understand they can be hard on the bottoms of shoes, but they have some plates that you can put on the bottoms of the shoes to prevent them from doing damage. Other than that, what do you guys think of them?

Right now I'm using some Shimano SPDeeez.

Thanks.

I don't ride Candy's but I have been on Eggs for a while now - The same set of pedals for years with no issues.
Yes, they have worn a couple of grooves in the shoes, but the plates can prevent that.
I love them. Easy to clip in and fairly maintenance free.
I use them on my roadie too.

i rode with candy's for about a year and never had any problems with shoe damage. if you're interested, i can let you borrow a set of mine to try out. I run flats now, so i haven't used them in a while.

nam, i'll take you up on that borrow offer. do you have cleats i can borrow too?

reason i want these is because i'm wanting something with a little bit of a platform since i'll be out of the saddle quite a bit on the s/s.

I've been using the Candy's for over a year now and I love them. Easy to clip in and out of and if you ever encounter any mud, they're superior to Shimano's SPD's. I was having a hell of a time trying to clip into my Shimano's on a muddy day on the loop. Ann on the otherhand never had an issue on her Candy's. Ever since then, I've been on Candy's.

Oh yeah I've never noticed any premature wear on my shoes either. I'll look tonight and report any wear if I see it. Lastly, I did notice the Candy's giving me hot spots on my foot on long rides, 30-40 milers. However, anything under that, they've been very comfortable. Hope that helps Brett.

Thanks for all the input guys. Very informative! I do hate when my Shimanos get all mudded up. It sucks picking the mud out with a stick!

I've been checking some out on ebay, does $56 shipped sound like a good price?

Brett, wait till the Path sale. I picked up some Candy's for $20 last year. Look in the loose pedal box, that's where I saw them.

I have the Smarties; I found that they were (cheaper) and a bit easier to clip in/out than the Candies. However, I tried the Candies without the plates.

I love the egg beaters, but seem prone to hot spots with them--the platforms help a bit. Plus, no maintenance issues (a BIG plus for me)

I switched from the SPDs after riding Temecula in the rain, where I couldn't clip in AT ALL, yet my team mate had no problem with her egg beaters. I love the switch.

I have the eggbeaters. I found that the plates under the cleates were a must. Without them the pedals were real tight until I wore a groove in the shoe.

Borrow before you buy, Bret. I really wanted to like the Candy SLs when I first got them, but never fully came around. I had always used SPDs and thought I'd try something new. Guess I got accustomed to the positive, adjustable clip mechanism of the Shimanos, 'cause I never could get comfortable with the comparatively generous float of the Candys. Granted, this very feature is what draws so many to the Eggbeater style in the first place, but it just wasn't for me. Give 'em a good spin on varied terrain--they will feel much different.

As far as mud clearance, the Candy pedal and cleat beat the SPD system hands down. The Shimanos truly suck in that regard.

I want to go on your first ride with you. Maybe a nice El Moro climb?

I use regular eggs and have no problems with them...great petals, my buddy used candys and he loves them for the small platform. only drawback on eggs is that you can't change the tension

Tried Candy's ....
tension not adjustable
unclip when you strike the bottom side on anything
felt like standing on ice, so slippery from side to side

back to SPD's

I used to ride eggs as you know. I found I would slip and slide in them quite a bit. Even when new they slid around a little. I'm starting to come around on the times I have now. Definetely hold my foot nice and firm, plus they have a little platform too. Seem to fit the SIDI's like a glove.
