Yeah, the old lady picked me up some new shoes I pointed out in a magazine, and they came with the times. I think the key to eggs is to have a fresh pair of cleats near by. By the way Bret, I've got some brand new egg cleats if you want to use em. Actually, I've got a used set of eggs if you're interested too.

I started using the Shimanos then switched to Candys because they are lighter. At first I liked them a lot. Lately I feel they are inconsistent. I will be clipped but If I pull straight up I will come unclipped, which is not good. Not sure if its my pedals cleats or whatever but I hate it.
Im probably swiching back to Shimano as they JUST WORK.

Yeah, I was having the same problem. I would be able to pull straight up with my leg, and I'd come right out. Plus the sliding drove me nuts... I could slide my heel inward a bit and my ankle would scape against the frame. Doesn't feel good after a dozen or so times. Perhaps my technique is to blame.

i completely forgot to mention that the bike has Time pedals on it, anyone have any old Time cleats they wanna lend me? i appreciate the comments on the egg beaters, but the reason i was looking at the Candy's is because i am wanting something with some form of platform.

I took advantage of the 12 days of xmas sale Jensens put on and bought the shoes and the pedals too for 60 bucks. I've used nothing but SPD's on mtb'ing and never felt comfortable with them. I've been running platforms for the last couple years, and figured to try something new. Lot's of good info guys, Thanks. I hope they work okay for us.

Big fan of the Time Z's. Their heavy, but they have a very secure platform that's nice to have should you unclip on some nastiness. I've been running Times for several years and I do remember there being a learning curve to get used to the float. I've also used shimano 646 and Candys, the 646 didn't have the float that I liked and the candys would unclip too easily on pedal strikes, just in my experience anyway.

I use the eggs... love em.
a couple things, you can put the cleats on 2 ways... 1 gives you more float, the other less. for those of you with clip out probs on the up stroke, that has always been a sign to me that I need new cleats, and I would switch them out as soon as that happened once. the old cleats used to wear very fast, the new ones don't seem as bad. |

How are the Times with mud? Are they as good as the egg-beater? And, are they much more difficult to clip out of when riding?
I've never had a problem (knock on wood) with unclipping when I don't want to unclip. But, I've only been using these pedals for 6 months or so.

I used to run Candy's so I could unclip for uber technical decents. They were 10 times better than SPD's. Easier to get in and out of and no clogging issues in sand or mud. I then went to eggbeater and found I could stand on them (unclipped) jsut as easy as the Candys. I run carbon soles in my shoes so no hot spots.

I have used Candys for about 2 years. started with Candy C, then went to the Ti. I love them. As Von-Skip found out the problems that a lot of people have with them is worn out cleats and/or spring bushings. The only drawback I have found with them is that they take a little getting used to and hot spots can occur if your foot is not on the pedal correctly

I have been using Candy'sfor two years now. I have noticed that the pedal wears into the bottom of my show plastic between the shoe and the clip. It eventually got too loose for me and I had to get new shoes. Someone suggested to me that placing the spacing shim clip that should go inside your shoe between the shoe bottom and clip may guard shoe wear.
Beyond that no mud problems and the clips need replaced when they get sloppy...Just like a bad ho.

Hey guero,
That bike looks mighty familiar! Actually, after I got the Heckler from you, the first thing I did was install a pair of Eggbeater SLs. I really like the Crank Bros pedals and I use 'em on everything. BTW, the bike seems to be working out pretty well. I was getting too much sag with the 400 lb spring, so I'm waiting on a 550 lb one from Fox. I'm sure it'll be a cool ride! Best of luck with your new pedals. jerome |

right on jerome!
you will love the huckler, many of the guys on here can vouch how solid of a bike it has been for me. you can search around the pix album and the trailtalk forum to see what type of rides i've taken her on. sounds like that beefier spring is a good call, i had to get the 400lb one, the stock one was too soft. welcome to str by the way! the guy that was with me that night you bought it is lbmtb aka george, he created the site. hopefully you can join us on some rides, although it might be like seeing an old g/f with a new boyfriend seeing you and my huckler! j/k man.
