Default Light Question

So I got a NiteRider Trail Rat 2.0 for Christmas from my In-laws. Now in a perfect world I would buy a second light, but for now I will have to use one light or not conduct any night rides.

My question is should I mount the light on my bike or helmet?

Any advice is appreciated; I have never ridden at night.

If you only have one light do it on the helmet. The "perfect'" setup would be HID on head and halogen on bar to give you some shadows.

on trails i agree you want on head so the light follows your eyes (think tight switchbacks). If you running them for night commute handbars should be fine

I have a Trail Rat and I find it works fine mounted on the bar, but I would probably vote for the helmet.
If you ride close to somebody using a HID, you don't have to worry about it.

Defintely go for the helmet mount. Is the Trail Rat a HID? I used a Nite Rider HID (forgot model) for the 24OC just on my helmet and it was enough. Mine had 3 settings and the dimmest setting was all I needed.

That would be a negative Von Skipp.

I need to find a cord attachment so the light can reach the battery pack in my bag.

For me it depends on the trail.

Handlebar:
-Shows shadows so you know how big the bump is
-No issues with dust creating clouds & blocking vision

Helmet:
-Sees around corners

I'd use it Bar-mounted on fireroad or doubletrack; especially if you are very familiar with the course. Blackstar or Fullerton Loop would be examples.

If you're doing winding singletrack then the helmet mount is the only way to go. The Luge is very difficult if you can't see what's coming.
