Default Cattle Canyon Question

My Topo shows a jeep trail going from Cattle Canyon Bridge, off Glendora Mountain Road, up to the RV Park at Cow Canyon Saddle.

Cattle Canyon Bridge is the East Fork San Gabriel River near East Fork Fire Station. Reason I ask is that it does not show as being in Sheep Mountain Wilderness area yet my map is marked off limits to bikes but not hiking. There are some ranches out there so am I right in thinking it is a private road? Have any of you inlanders tried riding it?

I tried asking that question to the Forest Service yesterday but no one was at the Fire Station.

Dean,

Last time i rode that fireroad it as about 10 years ago before there a "no trespassing" sign at the top. down at the bottom there was or is supposed to be a tungsten mine. not sure of the status of it now, but it was 7 miles from the top down to the wash.

That's my 2 cents on that, amigo.

I heard there was a gun toting disgruntled property owner down there. I've thought about going down there with either my bike or my truck.

I've rode it twice and it is a private road and there is a fellow who told me he'd have me arrested if I came back. It is a hard ride with a lot of ruts and even more deep sand. We rode last time from Cow Saddle down to East fork, then to Azusa Canyon. I don't recommend this ride as the scenery is not to great once you're going down, and you can't get a lot of speed because of the sand.

Thanks for all your replys. The upper part does not look interesting, I was more interested in the section from the bridge until you start the climb out of the wash.

This seems like a no opertunities area to ride.

OK my attention will be focused back up on top. I have been waiting for years for them to open Highway 39 to Cyrstal Lake area. May have to drop in from the top (Highway 2) to explore that area. But man the stuff out there is steep. A lot of the singletrack, like Isip Rim Trail, is 1000ft a mile...doesn't seem to be bikeable. I see a fireroad that drops from Highway 2 into Little Jimmy but gets way steep after that.

Another ride (un-named legal trail) that looks interesting is Dawson Saddle to Throop Peak, again off the closed section of Highway 2 and a pavement climb to get to. Anyone know much about this trail.

Niether of those two rides are long but put together with the closed part of Highway 2 could be some miles. Anyway next weekday off.

Dean,

When did 39 get closed to crystal lake? I used to run 39 in my Chevelle, BMer, and GTI, and could always get to Crystal Lake. Spen't more than a couple nights camped out in the back seat of whatever I was driving because I was too tired to come home (always ran the canyons late), or just felt like waking up in the mountains. But the most recent trip was probably 5 years ago. Are you talking about where the highway is closed about 3 miles past the right turn to the Crystal Lake camping area; or have they closed the 39 further down the canyon?

HWY 39 closed since the heavy rain two seasons ago. Gate closed 3-4 miles South of Coldwater Ranger Station, just beyond West Fork Bridge.

California Highway Road Closures.
