Now since I am new into Mountain Biking I've never used the clip in pedals. Would I be better off going with platforms? Could you throw some recommendations out there? I tried searching the forum (wouldn't let me) and mtbr reviews but I'd like more opinions. Thanks guys

Hello.
Try platforms until you feel confortable on the trail. Learing braking, balance, techincal riding downhill, climbing will be easier when you dont have too worry about clipins

Crank it out

There is a learning curve initially for clipless, but I think it works very well for all mountain stuff. If you find clipless to be not your thing, then just find some flats!
The search button is a bit wonky: I always have had to go to the home page before it let's me search the forums. EDIT: Go with flats before clipless; the skills from knowing flats are good to know, as people have mentioned here. Don't listen to me. ![]()

I started out with Crank Brothers Mallets which are great platform clipless combo pedal (with teeth for grip). They tend to be pricey but I found mine for $59 on sale about a year ago. For my new bike, I just recently purchased Crank Brothers Candy SL's off ebay for $75. I hear the CB Acids and Smarty's are decent as well.

I'd say get some good platforms, I use crank bros 5050's but they're on the heavy side if your trying to save weight. Once you have conquered riding then you can switch to clipless if you want. In my opinion starting on clipless is like starting on a full suspension bike. You can do just fine starting on both, but you wont learn the fundamentals as well.

I go back and fourth between platforms and clips.
Get the Wellgo Mag pedals.. http://www.adrenalinebikes.com/store...oryname=Wellgo These are 376 grams for a set and are strong enough for DH use. |

azonic 420s. if you buy these pedals, get a pack of setscrews from azonic. use the setscrews in certain areas where you need the lateral grip. mine work great like this.

The MG-1's are great. I haven't tried the Atom Lab Trailpimp platforms, but they look good, and they don't have pins to scratch your legs. If you want clipless pedals with platforms, I say go for the M647's. Durable and have a nice stable platform. As with any Shimano clipless pedals, you can get the beginner-friendly SM-SH56 cleats, and you get adjustable release tension. |

I got these per recommendation by Rockinthecasbah :
http://www.danscomp.com/465104.php Their really cheap but surprisingly good. The bearings are tight out of the box but they seem to loosen up after some good riding. They got slammed against some decent sized rocks at Big Bear and the're still goin strong.
