hell i like road riders. i think if i had the motivation to ride a bike that looks like it would break the instant i stepped on it it would make me a much better XC and DH'er, but i would be the only roadie with platforms!!!

Man, that is the worst analogy of all time. If there is a better example of inane bigotry, then I haven't seen it. Oh wait, yes I have. It's road bikes versus mountain bikes. I love the internet. It's the only place where you have total freedom to click and look wherever you choose and not click on stuff you don't want to see but everybody wants to tell everybody else what they should and should not do in case they click on something and are forced to look at it. It's the weirdest thing to me. And, it's pandemic on forums. All these rules. WTF? It's totally simple... Problem: "I don't want to read about downhill riding because I don't like it. Solution: I don't click on posts that say stuff like "downhill" in the title. It's not as if we're posting about hang gliding trips or organizing a group excursion to an art museum here. Why don't we get into a debate about what a trail really is. I mean, is it singletrack? Fireroad? What about a "mult-use bike trail" That's effing pavement for chrissake! Can I talk about riding that kind of trail on STR? Is it a trail for reals or is it really just a godforsaken road in disguise? Effing roads! They're always trying to sneak up and pretend to be trails to get me to ride them! I think we should change the name of the site to SoCal Dirt Riders so that we don't have confusion anymore. Wait, but then what do we do if they trail is made up of decomposed granite? F***! This is complicated. Okay, we can count decomposed granite as dirt because it's loose and sandy. Hold on. Is dirt soil? Or sand? Can I ride at the beach? (Yes, but just don't tell anyone on STR that you did or they'll get their baggies in a bunch. Okay?) Alright, so I can ride on soil, sand, and decomposed granite. Now, clay is really not dirt at all. Sure, it's in the ground and all, but its either all hard, dusty. Unless it's wet then it gets all sticky. That's not dirt. So, no riding on clay I guess. And what about slickrock and stuff. Can I ride that? Better not, it's actually a lot like road. It's hard and hurts if you hit it. But, it has dirt on it sometimes. Okay, okay, I can ride on rock as long as it has dirt on it. Wait! What if the road is dirty? I mean, I could ride near construction sites and stuff. Those roads have dirt on them. Would that count? Come on, guys, we need the rules. We need to have a strict code that we can all follow so there's no more mistakes. Also, let's be clear about the dress code. Man, there's nothing worse than people who can't follow simple rules for fashion. After all, we know that mountain biking is about how you dress and look. So, first, no lycra. None. Unless you hide it under your baggy shorts. That's okay. As long as we don't see your lycra it's fine. Or, if you're racer. You can wear lycra if you're fast. And skinny. Okay, so mark that down. Lycra is okay if you're fast, skinny, racing and/or it's hidden under baggy shorts. Also, you can't match. Your jersey and shorts must be different colors. Now, about helmets. If you are caught riding without a visor you will be kicked out of the club. It's well known that mountain bike helmets have visors. So, get it right. We don't need people thinking that you're a roadie. No half-fingered gloves either. That's also for road. Cover up those fingers, people, it's obscene! Okay, so that about covers it, I guess. I feel like we accomplished a lot today. Sh*t. I just thought of something. I don't think downhillers and freeriders are aloud to post their rides here. Now, hear me out. First, many downhillers do shuttles. Now, as we all know, you have ride up and down the trails, not just down. The site ain't called Socal Downthetrailriders. Worse, sometimes those guys ride ski lifts. So, then we'd have to call the site Socal Trail/Skilift Riders and that's too long and stupid. So, no lift ridiing unless you're skiing (and sure as f*ck don't post about it here!). Now, we all know freeriders go off ramps and stuff all the time. Those are made of wood. If you're riding over wood then you're not riding a trail. That sh*t is obvious. Come on now. We've already established that trails are made of dirt. Wait, if the wood is a natural fall, like a tree or a branch then that is wood you are allowed to ride on and will not get you tossed out of the club. Now, that's finally it. I think. Yeah. Those are good rules. Now no one will be confused ever again.

Ummm long winded? I will have a better responce after I go take a crap..... BRB (this may take a while)
So your answer is to make it about how Fords are worse that Chevys? OK, take your political correctness and take a hike. This is a TRAIL riding website. Just because a road bike is also a bicycle doesn't mean we have to discuss them on a TRAIL riding website. I am sure that if the opposite question was raised on a road bike site the same objections would be made there. We are talking about apples and oranges. Yes, they are both fruits but two different kinds all together. If there is any question about this, please refer to my signature. That should sum it up. Look, we don't HAVE to get along. That is the beauty of living in this country! Quote:

I believe the SART has more pavement then dirt. And it's labeled a Trail as in Santa Ana River Trail.
Nuff said. Loved it Gurp, got some free time on your hands huh? Kids must be takin a nap. Please lets not try to divide the group. None of the posters are roadies only. We ALL mountain bike and it is all of our passion. It's just another faucet of riding that gets talked about as a lot of us like doing both.

That was all that you got from my answer? Political correctness? Chevys and Fords? You can't see the inherent silliness of what you're proposing? You missed all of my brilliant satire and the fact that 90% of what I said was a joke?
Well, it's like Robert A. Heinlein once said, "Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes the teacher's time and annoys the pig." I can't believe you took a dump, thought about it, and still the best you could come up with was to tell me to f*** off. Sure, you used a few more words than that. But, still, your basic message is that I'm wrong because you say so and I should go f*** myself. Cool. I'm comfortable with that. Enjoy your tiny little world, bro. Quote:

Yes, I do enjoy my "tiny little world" with my house, two wonderful children, two brand new cars and a fantastic wife; all this with no credit card debt at all. Thank you! At least you appreciate the fact that I do live the American dream. I can go ride my MOUNTAIN BIKE anywhere I want and just about roll over anyone in my way.
Once again, you are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. It doesn't make me any "less" than you. We have a difference of opinion on a TRAIL RIDING website. To me, you are the joke. You want to argue over apples and oranges? OK, you win, I will just carry on in my tiny little world. Just hope that I never come across you as I am riding because I will surely leave you in my dust. I can be found in Palos Verdes almost every weekend. Care to join me? I am not hard to miss, here is my bike: Uh, checkmate!

man, gurp went off! atta boy glen!
anyhow, ive been around this site since its debut and have watched it grow and helped gouge out here and there with it. around a year ago when it was a maybe half the size it is now, there was a core group of us that rode every weekend together and we all posted our pix and RR and knew who each other were. most of us still do ride together, some guys have moved and other guys can't ride as much from time to time but my point is as this site grows it seems like it has changed and lost its small town appeal to me. to each their own but in a way i miss the way things used to be on this site...i'm not sure if any of you other veteranos feel the same way, but i just thought i'd share my views. of course things are bound to change but it seems like there are some new people that have come on here and stir the pot, or other people that come on here with attitudes and i can 99% assure you that none of that was present when the site was up and coming....now it just feels "different". oh yeah, i dont really care if people talk about road riding here. |

I agree Dino, and I haven't been around that long. Some people just want another MTBR I suppose. I have only met a handful of people on here, all of whom are really cool people. I think my next purchase will be a road bike, just because.
