1) They don't attempt to overcompensate for their lack of physical activity by riding the edge of the bike lane, cramping you into the side mirror of a parked car.
2) They don't talk on cell phones. 3) They don't drink/drug/drive (no accidents caused by mixing Prozac and Jameson). 4) They hurt less people. 5) They run away instead of into you. 6) They're environmentally friendly. 7) They're cuter. And, that's why I prefer mtn biking to road riding. (Stuff I was pondering on the way up Black Star after catching a glimpse of my first bobcat while on the trail.) ![]()

I've been lucky enough to see Bobcats at Chino Hills (multiple times) and Peters Canyon. I was on Telegraph Trail and a bobcat jumped out of the bushes in front of me and ran for 20 yds with me behind him before jumping back into the bushes. That was probably the coolest experience for me riding. I also saw a mtn lion in Chino Hills, which crossed my path about 40 yds in front of me. Needless to say, I was pretty careful when I came across the crossing.

You will see Bobcats more often in the parks that don't allow dogs. I normally see a couple a year.

And, THAT is why dogs aren't allowed on all trails (although you should try telling it to the OC yuppie groups)When I was young, we used to have a Bobcat that ran through the stable off of Trabuco. It lived in the back trail off until it was relocated, but I only caught a glimpse of it one evening.

I was riding Monroe Truck Trail today and caught a glimpse of a bobcat, or so I thought. Turns out it was a Mt. Lion cub! You know what that means, mama's close by. Never saw mama, thank goodness, but the ride definitely took on a new feeling, as we crept around blind corners yelling for about the next 10 minutes!

I believe I've seen "Bob" before. I was coming down Raptor Ridge before the Ranch House. I couldn't believe "Bob" didn't move out of the way as I was flying down the ST. Finally, he got up and ran away before I reached him. |

I've seen a lot of them, but the closest I've ever got was at Chino Hills, it might just be this Bob cat. The one I seen was a smaller female who just sat there in the road as we approached. I started to yell to scare it off, and my friend asked me "What are you doing?". When I told him I was trying to scare it off, he asked "Why?". I didn't know and we walked right on by within a foot of this very beautiful animal. She just looked up at me as we passed by with half closed kitty eyes, like she was just bored with the whole thing. Acted more like a domesticated house cat then a real wild animal.
I've seen others at Claremont, Marshall, Inspiration Point. Big Bear, Moro, and a very big one in Utah up by Navajo Lake.

Getting back on the bike.

Have not seen one in a while, but had a great experiance with one on Wood Canyon by the "fence" area at the base of the hill up to Lynx. He/she - was on the trail and casually move off through the fence down to the waters edge. Then proceeded to lay in the sun, use a nearby log/bark to claw on, then ran off. Watch all of this from 20 feet away for about 5-10 minutes. Also have seen them along Coyote and at the meadow area of Mathis.
By the way - Rangers are asking for reports of bobcats to review possible illness etc.
