Question Clipless Question

Yesterday while rideing home from work I was leaving from an intersection and was still in a High Gear, as I pumped and pulled my legs to get going my right foot poped out of the cleat and I gave a Flying knee kick to the Handle bars . I'm fine but now I am leery about the pedal. Does this happen a lot, or did I just over tourqe it being in a high gear? and what exactly does that hex bolt on the back clipin do?

The hex bolt controls the release angle(How far you need to turn your foot to clip out of your pedals).

Tighten that sucker!!

What kind of pedals are you using??? SPD or some other type??

If you are using SPD, there is an adjustment on the back of the clip near the spring that allows you to adjust the amount of tension in the pedal. Its all personal preference as to how much tension there is but it sounded like you have your pedals set a little loose and starting in a high gear caused your foot to go flying....

If your pedals are double sided, make sure you adjust each side to get equal tension....

Now for Look type pedals, I have no clue since I only used SPD's

I have Shimano SPD's and I know this sounds dumb, but since it controls the release angle do I turn it right twards the (+) sign; or left to the (-) sign. It's just me but Right = tight, but a + sign to me means MORE give/eaiser release.

Those arent angle adjustments.... they are only spring tension adjustments... They adjust how much force is needed to clip in and to release.

If you are running the SH-51 cleats, these are single release which means you only twist your heel outward to release. If you are running the SH-55's, these are multi-release and you can remove your foot either upward or sideways. these also tend to have a little more of a loose or "float" feel to them....

Don't tighten too much or you might end up doing an horizontal track stand.

Practice. I've had them for almost a year and it's second nature now. And I think I am better and moreconfident on the Downs cause I tell the rear where to go better, and Climbing has improved 100%
