Default For those considering 29er singles...

Though I am not one to preach that 29ers cure cancer, or even are the right choice for certain types of riding, I will take to my grave that for single speeding they are the shizzle for sure.

Here is a short list (ie, not comprehensive) of sub $1000 29ers that I think would be an awesome choice to test the waters in an area of riding where 29ers do make sense. There are some cheap frames you could consider to build your own but the choices for complete bikes under $1000 (+/- few bucks) is pretty good so those are what I put below.

Kona Unit 2-9

Redline Monocog 29er

Redline Flight 29er

Raleigh XXIX

On-One Inbred 29er

(note: this was my bike. stock comes with v-brakes and different bars stem but hubs disc ready so can easily add Avid mechs for cheap)

Jamis

Gary Fisher Rig

KHS

< will be coming out with 3 I believe....no doubt at least one under $1K>

Best price I could get on the Kona was 1200, is there better deals out there? I like the blue more then the green. The Unit2-9 does come with disc brakes and the componets are bullet proof.I'd also have to go with suspension up front.

hmmm...are you talking about a Unit 2-9 2006? The one I included a picture of is a 2007 and retails for $999 which I think is pretty good for what you get and certainly you can beat retail as well. 2007 should be good for single speeds indeed

Those are great rides for <$1000. It’s interesting, the manufacturers are producing great 29’r SS’s, yet I really don’t run across too many on the trails. I impressed with the array of choices for a market that is still a nitch.

Now that I think about it, MTB is all about nitches with DH, FR, FS, HT, SS, 29 SS, JUMP, URBAN, XXX, TT, BB, CC (yeah, I’m just making stuff up now).

Yo! Desert Bitch, are you ever going to make it out to So-Cal and ride with us? Or am I going to have to look you up on my next trip to Prescott...maybe you would be into a little SSing around Sedona? I am sure you could handle Bell Rock Pathway . If not I have never been on Hawes and have wanted to ride it.

Have you seen Mattt Kipper? is he doing his home work?

Sun Devils and Wildcats are like cats and dogs. They don't usually get along too well. Rarely will they cross the Mason Dixon line (Casa Grande) to venture into each others territories. Unless of course Miss Wildcat is a hottie and then that's an entirely different case.

glad you found it useful.....if i ever get a new "office" bike for my noon time rides it is gonna be another fully rigid bike and definitely one of the below; probably the Kona or KHS since I will likely get the best deals on those.

I love having lunch time rides as an option. I work a mile or so from the Aliso Woods trail head in Orange County and blasting out a lunch ride is such a great way to break up the work day.

I need an office bike. Something like, oh, say the new Knolly Endorphin?

Oh, and what's with the price hookups you're getting lately? Do you have the "Customer of the Year" statuses at your LBS?

Might have to look into that, I am a Proj Manager (Const, Infrastructure etc) for Toyota currently.

Looked into Fluor a bit ago but they then shut down the Enterprise/Glennwood location.

Thanks

oops! Hijacked! - I think 29 inch wheel are cool too. Like the Raliegh and Kona.

I didnt get out today, but will tomorrow. It literally takes me spot on an hour to do my loop....leaving from my office door and back. Here are a couple of pics taken from my noon-time loop near the crest where i am able to see my work and be refreshed when i get back....i am fortunate for sure.
