Default Air Pressure

Okay, I am posting this because for some reason I have gotten 5 flats in the last month and the last one ended with my recent crash landing. I am wondering if maybe its due to running the wrong pressures. Wondering what you guys/gals are running in what conditions/trails? I am also going to check out the inner lining of my rims to see if maybe thats causing the problem.

Thanks!

Well to help you out we could use some more info on your setup and how much you weigh. I'm assuming you're running tubes obviously, so like you said definately check your rim strips and inside of the tire to make sure there is no debris/thorns or sharp edges anywhere on the rim. That said it would be wise to take the tubes that you've flatted with and find out if you are getting pinch flats or the holes are on the tread/top side of the tube. Depending on your weight and riding style and also the tire, you probably don't want to run much less than 35psi or so.......but that is all relative.

I am 220 riding a 06 Spec FSR front tire is 2.10 Blue Groove rear tire is 2.10 Nevegal. Going to check the rims out soon. Im a pretty mellow rider nothing really hardcore for me. I know a couple flats were due to thorns I rode through this stupid thorn bush and was pulling them out of both tires for about an hour. 2 other flats are from the same area so needless to say I wont be riding that direction again I have been running about 35-40psi for just about everything. When I changed my last tube I noticed the rim strip was still there but wasnt stuck down any longer. I wrapped it back down before installing the new tube. I know this all sounds silly but maybe I am just having a run of bad luck lately...

35 lbs. go for the Rim tape...it is cheap and easy. It'll definately cause flats without.

I run 40-45 psi front and back on Slime tubes with Panaracer Fire XC pros. I got pinch flats when I was running 35psi. I rarely get flats (knock on wood). I got a pinch on the Plunge (with 35psi) and got flats going through some really overgrown singletrack in San Sevaine canyon. Other than that, good to go. I also think I get better traction, actually, with the higher psi. (I ride a Stumpjumper FSR and am about 190lbs).

First the disclaimer: Don't listen to me.

First I like running low tire presure 25-30lbs, I run tubes and weight 220. When running a rigid fork, low tire presure is the only suspension I have. On my suspension fork bike I could bulldoze my way through things. Riding rigid has taught me to ride light, which has equated to fewer pinch flats on both bikes.

No Stans for me. I feel it is much safer on my solo remote rides to have the simplicity of fixing flats by replacing the tube. I do carry Slime tubes in the Camelback when I ride in Arizona.

165 when dressed for riding riding 4" x 4" bike.
2.1 Blue Groove in the front @ 30 to 32
2.1 Nevegal in the back @ 33 to 35

Switched back to 2.0 Spec Fast Trak Pro in the back before my last ride. Same pressure.

I run about 30psi front and back. Blue Groove 2.35 in the front and 2.1 Nevegal in the back, both on DT Swiss 4.1 rims. I'm about 155lbs +-3lbs. On longer rides I add 5psi to the rear.

F - BG @ ~32
B - Nev @ ~ 35

But I just got a new bike and with Weirwolf 2.55LTs. So throw all that out the window. Well, maybe not... I'll probably ride around the same pressures on those tires.

I tried those 2.55LT's loved them on the slickrock in Arizona, but the front washs out easy on the decomposed granite in the San Gabriels. Not a good all round tire. The pro's were winning races at The Downieville Downhill on those tires this year, but those guys know how to control there bikes in a drift.

I'm on the opposite end here, but I still would highly recommend Stans No Tubes. Great stuff and kiss flats due to stickers and such goodbye! I run pressures around 25 to 30, and never pinch. I know guys who weigh in, in the Clydesdale catagory and they run as little as 25 pounds with no issues. I do like the bigger tire also though 2.35 to 2.5, seem to work better for me with the Stans set up.

On my XC bike. Im running on Maxxis Highrollers 2.1 with Stans tubeless. Front and back air pressure is in the 18-22 psi range. On the Nicolai DH bike, I set it at 25 psi on tubes wrapped on Panaracer FR. BTW, im just 130 pounds. Low pressure equals to smoother ride, like having extra suspension. LOL

The low pressure helps with grip way more then anything else I've tried. To low though and the tire will come off the rim.
