Mountain Biker Impales Leg On Tree Branch
NBCSanDiego.com POSTED: 8:52 am PDT August 16, 2006 SAN DIEGO -- A mountain biker was seriously injured Tuesday when he fell and impaled his leg on a branch while riding on a trail in North County, officials said. The accident happened at about 7:15 p.m. on a dirt trail running across private property near Faraday Avenue in Carlsbad, according to Carlsbad police. Daniel Durkin, 39, was riding with a friend when he crashed, officials said. A tree branch pierced one side of his leg and exited out the other side. Durkin's bicycling partner called 911 with a cell phone and led sheriff's deputies to Durkin's location. The deputies called in a sherriff's helicopter to fly Durkin to Palomar Airport, where he was transferred to a helicopter ambulance. He was flown to Scripp's Mercy Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. __________________ Say good-bye to Flightline!  |

The sad thing is I had finished riding around 5:30 and was talking to a couple of guys who were about to drop in. They were asking about what trails to ride, yada, yada, yada. Man... I hope it wasn't them.

That's why I always carry a handsaw in my pack- just cut off any impaled braches and ride out. Helicopter evacuations are for pussies.
