That’s probably not a good thing. I believe SS is no problem on the knees if you’re careful about gearing and riding style. There are some SS’rs who choose a gear and stick with it everywhere. I think it’s a religious thing. That’s not for me. I’m one of those who changes gearing for a particular ride or race.
The worst gearing (IMO) is the one that isn’t high enough to comfortably ride out of the saddle, yet is too high to sit in the saddle for a prolonged time. The stress on the knees is worse when crunching in the saddle. When I’m not sure of what gear to go with, I trend toward the higher gear. My knees have never given me problems out of the saddle. |

I am with SScheetz on this one. I have experenced no knee problems when SSing...but I don't after geared rides either.

I used to run quite a bit and did a fair amount of training. My knees would only ache when I picked up the distance to more then 13 miles. I did notice that when I went to an easier gear during this training period the ache went away. And after I finished the marathon or half marathon I could go back to my original gearing with no pain. If you're not running and your knees are aching, I would suggest you go to an easier gearing as all your probably doing is damage at this time. Like SSheetz said you can change the gearing. You might want to ease into the next harder gear.
