Lethal when nessesary

Ok, So I have been absent for a while partially due to my daughter's birth and needing to support the Fam. As well as my embarassment at my Suck ass endurance on my last ride at Aliso. Anyways I have been riding the hard tail to work to change the later. I noticed that on Geoladders if you have one of the GPS devices you can create your own route. Could I make a personal route to work and list my training ride on Signal Hill and get points for it???
Also what are some good GPS's on the market?

http://www.garmin.com/products/edge305/ The perfect Geoladders tool! With this you can make your own personal routes and achieve points. If your commute to work is on the road be sure to post it on the road ladder. Currently we are creating NAV files where you can upload a route to your Edge. This will give you turn by turn directions where to go. You could literally ride a route blind and never get lost. This a link to GPS Playback. The dots represent riders. http://www.geoladders.com/gps_route_...?route_id=1395 The Edge is a great tool for keeping track your rides and training. Those who have used this Garmin device, does it respond quickly when navigating? I have used several GPS devices during off-road racing and often the directions or mapping can lag because of satellite response times. I know on mtn bike trails often you make several turns in the matter of seconds and I wonder, does it keep up?

ON GLadders it looked to me that the route creators took their sweet time to make the route was marked correctly.
Thanks Skippy! good to see #7 lookin out for #386 ![]() Is it a bar mount for the Garmin?

If you think you might want a GPS for other outdoor activities besides just cycling, than I would suggest not getting the Edge. Get something like a Garmin eTrex series, Garmin GPSMAP 60 series, or something along those lines. I personally use a GPSMAP 60CS, which I have loaded with topo maps and street maps. I can enter an address into my GPS and it will direct me to that address. Kind of nice to find that TH. The 60CS is now discontinued, and it's replacement is the 60CSx.
Von-Skipp is right though, the Edge units are perfect for cycling. Personally, I can't justify spending the $$ on a cycling specific GPS unit though. If you compare the two units on the Garmin website, you'll see that the Edge is destroyed in the comparison of overall outdoor features. However, in cycling specific features, like heartrate or training software, than the Edge wins. Also, the Edge does not take disposable batteries. All of my sucky routes I created on geoladders were created using my 60CS. I could mount my GPS to the bars, but I'd probably wreck and destroy it the first time I did. I keep mine in mesh pocket of my camelbak. This absolutely sucks for navigating though. The world is full of tradeoffs. |

i got the 205 (no candence/heart for me). I like it. have yet to "push' data to it for navigation (as V-Skipp mentions) but tracks your riding well and has some cool features tht allow you to "race" yourself, etc. Software that comes with it is okay at best but motionbased is pretty cool. I believe you can post to motionbased and pull down routes as well
As found on motionebased Improved Course Download - We've made some improvements with Course Downloads, so you should be able to download any activity at MotionBased as a Course using the MotionBased Agent. We encourage everyone to start experimenting with Courses. Once you get the hang of using Courses during your workouts, you'll begin to really see the value of your GPS device.

Just to make sure there is no confusion, the Edge is an incredible tool for riders. It has the latest GPS receiver on the market so it's quite literally one of the most sensitive GPS units you can buy today. It also has about 50 different metrics that that you can toggle through (although most people will only use 6-10 of them). I've been using my Edge 305HR for about 5 months now and can honestly say that I've had almost zero problems (it's frozen up twice but only once on the trail). The battery life is solid; it's heald up through rain, mud, snow and heat; it's rather rugged and it's very easy to use once you get used to it. As for mounting: Like Skippy said, put it on your stem and you'll likely never have a problem. Given the size of the unit, it fits perfectly on any stem that's 90mm or longer and, unless you have some strange, gnarly, upside-down crash, you will almost never strike the top of your stem on anything so the Edge is pretty well protected up there. Buy one, love it and use it...we'll be mapping more and more routes for you to download and follow on your Edge! |

http://www.geoladders.com/view_all_navfiles.php This is all the routes with NAV files. Routes with 8's or better are ok for riding blind. I rode 'Tijeras Creek Loop' blind (first time on trail) yesterday. Its a 14 mile loop with lots of turns. We didnt get lost once. It would of been impossible to ride this route w/o the NAV file on the Edge. |
