Default time for a new bike

I hope I'm not beating a dead horse- I've seen this thread a few times now, but here goes.

I currently have an IronHorse Warrior Hardtail. I bought it for durability and price plus the disc brakes. I love to jump and get a little crazy on this bike, but was hoping for more of an all-around rig. Well, now I'm getting ready to buy a full suspension model. I really like the Gary Fisher CAKE and the Kona DAWG, but I want to stay in a price range of $1,000.00 or so (I've seen that before).

Here's what I need:

Disc Brakes
Front and rear suspension ( 5 inches or better of travel)
Tough Frame (I tend to get rough on bikes

I'd like something that I can take on long rides and do uphill, etc without being too uncomfortable. I'm thinking an All-Mountain. I like the prices on the Iron Horse Close Out (Randall Scott).......but the shock to frame mounts ini the rear look brittle and small.......I can see some breaks there.

Any input? Anyone selling a used rig that might fit the criteria?

Anyone have any input?

Thanks a bunch!

Been all over e-bay and pink bike. By the time shipping gets figured in, there's really not too much of a discount going on.

Keep saving your pennies and hold off. At that price point, you'll just end up with a bike needing repairs all the time if you keep jumping. If you can wait till winter, you'll see a lot of shops blowing out this year's inventory for cheap. That's when you should look. I'd suggest a Kona Coiler...coil shock and burly frame.

On another note, I heard Adrenaline Bikes in Orange has Titus Motolites for $900. I'd jump on that and just move over your parts from the Ironhorse in the meantime. When you have the cash to upgrade, then start swapping out parts, that's what I did with my Ells.

Thanks for all the replies! What do you all think about the Iron Horse Warrior Pro? How hard is it to break a frame/weld these days?

the bikes that are" all mountain " are not really jumpers, use your doe for a good d/j frame of a freeride frameset.

So I can take a downhill or freeride frame and still be able to keep up on the long rides? My goal is to make a decent "all-purpose" bike that is tough enough to keep from breaking on the jumps.

I found a 2005 Iron Horse Sinister Comp Downhill frame on e-bay- looks fairly tough- may jsut buy that and part out components from my Warrior.

too...many....questions.....

Well I liked Iron Horse, as they were a great bike for the price- but I'm thinking more and more that I'm going to have to end up building this bike from the frame up. I don't think I'll end up going the Iron Horse route with this in mind- probably going with a Kona Coiler or something along those lines- unless I find a decent Turner frame.

I was down at The Path in Tustin the other day and noticed a sheet posted with discounted Kona pricing. I guess Kona is doing some promotion and cutting prices on certain models. I believe the regular Coiler, Coiler Air, and Dawg Deluxe were among those listed. I can't remember for certain, but I think std Coilers might have been around 1400-1500? I'd save for that over the IH if it were me. If you have the rest of the goods to get a rig rolling, perhaps you could see if Kona is doing any deals on the frames.

Thanks to all! I think I've decided against Iron Horse and def to go with Kona. I have looked at Turner (PRICEY) Haro, Ellsworth Specialized and Trek. All look like great products, but I have a serious issue spending $2000 plus for a nice rig. Maybe later. I checked wheelworld- they have been the best pricing so far (save for a few nice frames on e-bay).

I'm now planning to buy a Kona frame and build my own rig. What do I need to know about parts? Are things like shocks, bb, cranks, etc. fairly interchangeable? What's the best way to find out what measurements I'll nee dto add the above? Any quick and dirty suggestions? Just take the spec sheet from the frame and go from there?

I replaced the cranks and bb in my Iron Horse Warrior (LBS guy really started screwing that up) and I am fairly used to wrenching on my car and bike. Anything I should watch out for?

As always, your input is apprecaited! Have a great weekend!
