I meant to do that!

Came across this shop while driving through HB the other day (think was off of beach but cannot recall exact street). Looked like they had a decent amount of gear but not sure on pricing. Mostly a Specialized shop but did see some Yeti and Rocky Mtn rigs. Not endorsing shop - just passing on with some add'l info I found on internet
After 14 years of helping make Supergo in Fountain Valley one of the top Specialized retailers in the country, he (Sean Flynn) decided to resign his management position to run his own store. Surf City is a common nickname for this popular beach town in north Orange County. Flynn has named his 11,000-square-foot concept store Surf City Cyclery, with no mention of the Specialized brand. Surf City Cyclery is one of eight Specialized concept stores currently in various stages of development, with another 10 in the pipeline. Typically, Specialized requires that a retailer commit 60 percent of a store’s annual purchases toward Specialized product to be considered for concept status. The other 40 percent of inventory can consist of what Specialized calls “complementary brands.” Trek, the first supplier to create a concept store strategy, is finding new retail converts to its model as well. It’s slowly and quietly opening more stores, and it is estimated that Trek concept stores now total 35 nationwide.

Hey there party people just got home from Surf City Cyclery (http://surfcitycyclery.com/). Spent some time with the GM there Sean Flynn he is a really nice guy and took his time showing me around the new shop and all the bikes. He was the manager I believe he said of the old Fountain Valley Supergo for like 14 years. Road a sweet Intense 6.6 build around and lemme say that thing was plush. They also had the Kani protection gear I was looking for but didnt purchase just yet. Did pickup a set of glasses though, I was in need. They have a really good selection of just about everything.
They are having a huge grand opening party on July 29 that we should all head down to. Apparently, they are going to be doing a ton of raffles and he was thinking something like for every $10 you spend you get a raffle ticket. Everything from parts to clothing he mentioned a cruiser bike, some road frames and some mountain bike frames and complete bikes I think to. Specialized, Felt, Yeti, Intense, and I cant remember who else he said was going to be down there with a booth setup to help people. I mentioned this site when I was there and he checked it out in the store and said he was going to sign up so maybe he will chime in here soon. Anyway, just wanted to let you all know it looks like another nice bike shop in town to checkout. Jordan |

The shop is actually on Edinger, just off of Beach Blvd. It's across from REI (if that helps).
It is pretty big, and complete with everything from Specialized to Bianchii and more. It looks like a few of the guys from the SuperGoin FV have moved there.

Nice shop, but hate to bitch but EVERYTHING there is sold at suggested retail!!! at least all the stuff I looked at compared to other bike shops(NOT online!) hell I got my Cateye from the Path for $27 and they had it for $35! I also noticed my favorite Serfas grips I usually pay about $9 for are $13 there....
I love to support my LBS, but its tough when other places sell stuff a little cheaper! Ok you can call me a cheap bastard!!! ![]() |

I'm not all that happy when a supplier can dictate what a store owner can sell, but if they can live with it, I guess I can too. Trek I think will see a significant drop off in the next few years unless Discovery wins the Tour again. Specialized makes some great bikes, both mountain and road, so I would take a trip over to see what they have. As far as componets and accessories go, I don't mind paying retail , but not all the time. Even Supergo would cut you a deal. I believe this shop will too if you become a somewhat common visitor. I like shops that carry a wide range of products as far as shoes, clothes, jerseys, high end componets, and the next best latest, greatest things. Supergo did that part right.
I also don't care for the store that tries to push their in house product line. I wish Surf City the best of luck. And next time they open another big bike store can they do it in the IE, perferably not Riverside?

All you have to do is ask for a discount if you can buy it elsewhere cheaper. All they can say is no.
These type of manufacturer/dealer arrangements are fairly common in the industry I work in. In exchange for guaranteed floor space, volume commitments, etc the manufacturer will typically help out with store fixtures, inventory financing, advertising support, maybe even lease guarantees. It's a win/win situation if it's a strong, in demand product and a well run business. C |

i knew a lot of the mechanics @supergo, they all spoke of this future shop, for at least year and a half, and how they were waiting for it to open so they could bail performance. most of the supergo employees that transfered over to performance are really bummed, with the "performance" work ethic.
i'm not a fan of performance, and i'm glad i've got another lbs option. |

Thanks to all of you for posting the thread on Surf City Cyclery in HB. I'll do my best to keep it positive. Thanks to Jordan for taking the time to check out the shop and talk with me for a bit today and mentioning this site. In a nutshell, to those concerned about price matching, PLEASE, just ask. We do our best to handle every situation suitably for you. We are very reasonable and, most importantly, realistic.
I'm not advertising, just replying to justified concerns. We are here to serve you. Thanks, Sean Flynn Surf City Cyclery www.surfcitycyclery.com (ok, now I'm advertising. Sorry.) |

I'm sure Specialized and the others would boo hoo them if they were caught advertising for less. Now that does not mean they can't sell if for less, just not advertise it. Keeps a level playing field so other shops can/will carry the line also. Just part of the game I learned real quick when I started getting parts I make in retail store fronts across the US. |

I'd just like to put in my two cents. Supergo FV was by Far my favorite shop. The ethic, atmosphere, produt quality and selection were incredible, Until that is Performance took over. What happen to that shop hurt, I was upset that a great LBS turned into somthing cold and unfamiliar. After reading this thread though things have taken a quick turn for the better!
GOOD LUCk Sean! and everyone @ the shop. I'll swing in Sat for a look at the place.
