bummer about the wheel delay....is it the particular color choice on the hubs that is delaying the shipment to Larry? which WTB tires? because one model in particular SUCKS ASS (ie, Motoraptor), but i am guessing you are thinking Exiwolf or Nanoraptor. |

I just had my first ride on my Ventana today with Exis front and rear....LOVED it. To my surprise, the new Kevlar Exis weighed in at 765 and 770 grams....whereas my original wire bead ones were 840 and 845 grams. With the kevlar Nano at approx 625 grams, I dont miss it at all. Climbing traction, as expected, was improved such that overall, combined with the lower psi/higher volume, it rocked. Quote:
all I can give you is my very subjective 2 cents based on my riding style, given my riding skill, given my terrain: I honestly think that for a hardtail, geared or not, the 29er is the way to go, so long as you are not hucking the bike in which case, a 26er is gonna have a more robust wheelset and WAY more fork choices. The rolling over stuff advantage of the 29er makes it a great choice for hardtails since you get the benefits of being able to stand, etc, yet have more cush for a hardtail. Honestly, a 29er hardtail feels considerably more forgiving from my experience (with all things held pretty equal). In terms of rough stuff, it all depends on how rough. If you are talking cross country stuff to most all mountain stuff (man I hate that label) I think yes, assuming you have it set up right. Of course if you have girly 29er tires and a 72 degree head angle, still gonna be way twitchy. My Ventana was built with about a 70.5 degree head angle (comparable to about a 69.5 degree head angle on a 26er given the dynamics of 29ers, etc.) and it friggin ROCKS downhill. You can read all the theoretical advantages/disadvantages on empty beer dot com but one undeniable disadvantage has to do with parts: Wheels, all things equal, are gonna be more flexy given the longer spokes so while some use Supercomps now on their 26" bike, I think a bad idea on a 29er. Because the wheels/tires are bigger and people will likely not want to add a ton of weight (ie, weight of wheels a disadvantage with all things head equal), most choices are lightish for both rims and tires, with a couple of exceptions for rims (eg, Kris Holm 29er big ass rim for big ass riders). And I think (no data to support) with tires what has happened is that because people are of course gonna be sensitive to weight difference compared to their 26" bike, tires are on the girly side or the weight gets out of control real quick. Pretty much the burliest tires are the 2.3 WTB Exiwolf which in kevlar, weight 770 grams. Combine the lack of real (big/robust) tires and rims available for 29ers, can be a problem if you are gonna do drops and aggro stuff for sure....not to mention the lack of real robust fork choices. If 29er, get a real good wheelset that is gonna be stiff or you may regret it, unless only used for XC stuff in which case no real problem as far as I am concerned. Forks are SLOWLY coming out....not a ton to choose from. You can get a reasonably burly White Brothers Fluid TA fork.....or run a Maverick DUC-32....but in general, not even remotely close to the choices for 26" bike. Having said all that, for me, I think they are great....not better at everything, not perfect, but great. Last edited by FoShizzle; 07-16-2006 at 12:11 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

For my geared bike, I am putting on a Nano rear and Ignitor up front. The Ignitor is a good front tire but I have blown the sidewall and would not recommend it as a rear tire. It has better cornering than the Exi but other than that, the Exi rocks....and corners ok as far as I am concerned and handles rocks and stuff WAY better. |
