Default Fun times at CORBA Fat Tire Fest 2008

There were some good times to be had at the CORBA Fat Tire Fest this past Sunday at Lake Castaic. I arrived about 9:30 with wife and son, mounted up and hit the Poker Ride trails. My lousy two pair (deuces and jacks) didn't win me anything. Next up we checked out the various tents of manufactures, bike shops and what not. The skills area with a couple teeter-totters, skinnies, and ramps was popular throughout the day especially with the kiddies. We missed out on the hill climb and the log pull, but the wheelie contest and the bike limbo drew big crowds of spectators. Both my wife and son got into the bike limbo and did pretty well. The wife also took the skills class taught by Mark Langton and had a good time there. The raffle was the big draw of the day and just seemed to go on and on, maybe too long, it you can believe such a thing when goodies are being given away. Got to meet several people, Happy Gilmore introduced himself, Mike (Pain Freak), STJunkie. I know there were quite a few more STR folks there, but between my wife, son and a neice and nephew, it seemed like I was being pulled this way and that the whole day. The only bad about the day were the goats head thorns, they were everywhere and we all came home with flats. And new a few pics (i'd throw in some video clips of the bike limbo too if I knew how):

Wow, was yesterday a BLAST! I am definitely going again next year. The fire on the way up got me kind of worried since it was in the direction we were headed but we soon passed it and left it far behind. It was cool to watch the tanker planes circle around the lake to get water for the fire though. The poker ride was fun, lousy hand but good trails (minus the goat heads! Both Mark and I came home with flats in the front and back tires). The food was EXCELLENT! Very good. My favorite part was probably the wooden stunts. And the raffle was of course awesome, especially watching everyone get SO in to it. I am now a CORBA member (haha made good financial sense and payed off in the raffle!). The best part of the festival though was to get to meet and hang out with more people from STR. Good times indeed!

Mark showing his stuff

DavidB proving to himself these are too easy

And last but not least, David attemping the the jump- stunt, Chuck the ass-grab- stunt

(They completed both )

Mordy nicknamed it the "Flat Tire Fest"

We didn't get there until 2pm. I took one spin up the dam climb with my friend Steve (that was there to test 29ers) and came away with well over a half dozen nasty little goatheads in that short time. Fortunately, I had some Stans latex in the tubes on both wheels and it did it's job for the time being. I removed the goatheads and watched as Stans oozed briefly and then held... all the through our post-FTF ride and still holding air this morning

Thank you speckledtrout for the t-shirt for my son

Tara, it was nice to finally meet you!!! This was our 1st trip to a CORBA event and I am sure we will be back in the future. We had a great time yesterday hanging with the STR Crew. We got there late and fortuantely the ride started late so we didn't miss it. I didn't get any pictures, unfortunately. We ended up riding the Intermediate ride with DBD, Stinkyrider, Sprockethead, Slowspokes, Sheclimbs, PainFreak, Speckledtrout, Happy_Gilmore, DavidB, Ohyeah89 and a few others I can't remember. As for the raffle, I only won a hat and 2 T-shirts, but it was all for a good cause. Oh, and the food was excellent.

We watched everyone ride the stunts and then watched Hoosierdaddy win the wheelie contest (again). Oh, and the bike limbo was quite entertaining too!

It was delightful spending the day with the fine folks of STR. I had a great time despite the endless climbing on that godforsaken "trail". I thought that the law of physics was "that which goes up, must come down."

The company was excellent, the food delicious, the raffle endless and my tires still full of air! Gotta love tubeless.

I was hanging out with my friends at the Simi Cycling Center/Cannondale demo truck. We all were having a great time and quite a few folks jumped aboard a demo bike to do a loop. We had great seats for the bike limbo contest, which was the highlight of the day as far as I was concerned.

The shop guys were fortunate that all our demo bikes were set up tubeless. They didn't have to fix a single flat!

Living close by I rode from home to the event. I've been to probably five or six of these CORBA events. Logistically, this one ran the smoothest! The parking situation was a piece of cake compared to last year, where we waited for 45 minutes to enter the park. However, the riding is better out at Malibu Creek State park.

Trust me folks, there is better riding out this direction, minus the goat heads and steep climbs. Jeffj's post-FTF ride would have delivered the goods, and it is just five minutes away.

I had a great time as well, met a few STR people for the first time but I don't remember the screen names. Didn't get a single flat either, I guess that's what I get for running DH tires (2.35 Maxxis High Rollers).

The stunts were a lot of fun, and it was cool to see that everyone was giving it a shot. I didn't demo any bikes because I didn't want to be tempted, but I was really impressed by what the Bionicon guys had to show.

Default tubeless + 9 goatheads per tire = no problem

I wanna go back

I subscribed to the f-it theory after the raffle was over and went for those two bigger stunts. The teeter totter, easy as cake. The drop, went at it too slow and forgot to pull up. Going by that picture it's surprising I didn't crash. I did get a little love tap though

Anywho, the poker ride was, uh, something else. The downhills were fun, but too short. We took some god awful "advanced" detour that sucked.

the raffle was good because there were a ton of things to win, plenty of vendors, and the food was great because there was a ton of that too

The best part was seeing a bunch of STR members I haven't seen in a long time

Well Nate (hellboundheroic) won the set of pink body armor. Didn't think it matched his bike so he gave the ticket to someone near by.

ohyeah89, stinkyrider, speckledtrout, denmo and sdyeti all came away with a prize bag.

the freebies were tshirts, water bottles, patch kits

the grand prize was a frame from specialized, along with some rims and a fox fork. there were a handful or frames/bikes that were given away too.

that was one of the longest raffles ever

i'm waiting until Happy_Gilmore post his pictures...
