Default Specialized Warranty Policy

What is Specialized's warranty policy for 2nd hand owners? I bought my Demo 9 used and it looks like it has the typical cracks around the shock shuttle. Whoops. Probably should've researched a bit more before I bought it. Thanks.

That's what I figured. Weak.

Anyone have any luck with Specialized being nice about it?

I'll be the first to say you're probably boned. But I'll also say that all they can do is tell you to F' off and buy new next time.

In my experience with big brand makers (Gary Fisher) they don't warranty second had frames even if it is a glaring and noted manufacturing defect. Speaking of which, if anyone wants a purple gary fisher rig w/ no EBB and a crack in the BB-Seat tube junction, I'll give it to you for free, just pick it up or I'll ship it to you if you cover shipping.

However, I have had great luck with smaller companies (niner). They don't even ask if its 2nd hand, they just recognize that there is an issue with one of their frames, take it back and send you a new one.

So I think if you have one thing to learn from this experience it is if you buy second had go with a smaller more customer oriented company.

They even pro rate when you return a cracked frame. If you buy new and crack a frame from day one they'll only give you 80% credit towards another Specialized product. This policy is the number one reason I'm not on a Specialized Roubaix right now.

From my experience, this is not true if you are the original owner. Part of the reason why I own a Sworks Enduro SL (warranty exchange). This was on a 2 year old frame too!

Would it be impossible for you to contact the original owner and have him/her submit the warranty claim for you?

Probably impossible to contact him because he moved out of town, that's why he was selling it. Thanks for the advice guys.

Yeah, this was a glaring manufacturing defect that a lot of Demo's had. Oh well, you live and learn.

Part of getting a great deal on a used bike is that there is none/zero/zilch/nada warranty coverage.

This holds true 90% of the time but some manufacturers will take the frame regardless of whether or not you're the original owner. Jamis being one of them, which made it nice for me given that I've cracked two of their older freeride frames.

Why else would you buy a Jamis?

I would say of all the bike manufacturers it is the minority that hide behind their warrenty. Alot of them want you to be a return customer *new or used* I've never bought a new Sasla, but I'm willing to bet that if I had a cracked weld (within their 5 year warrenty period) they would switch out frames for me.

I think its just the huge mega companies that hide behind the lawyer talk.

Don't forget, it's just a numbers game. It's a business, not a hobby for the bigger companies.

Just because it's business doesn't mean its "good" business.

I know I'm just one man, but I will never buy a bike or frame from the big three again (trek / gary fisher, specialized, Giant?)

Give me a Salsa or Niner... or maybe some day custom.

But thats just me.

Well there's 3 different people on this board which have had the same situation.

Most of these companies are hit and miss depending on the current waranty representative. In my experience Specialized is consistantly generous about making justified exceptions on waranty claims. I have not experienced the 80% credit offer (that I can recall). Perhaps that is a shop thing?

Salsa is owned by QBP. They are solid on CS and huge.

I can tell you two things about Speccy Warranty for your situation. First off, it is going to all depend on what shop you go to. chances are, that your pretty much effed, being a second owner.

Now what I will say, if you get a good dealer<Waves hand> you will probably be able to get crash replacement at least.

I know this info pretty much sucks, but thats how the game is played, Trek, Speccy, Giant, Most all of them are the same way. If your nto the original owner, your on your own.
