Yes its All Mtn. Its 5" travel in rear and a little more with those forks. I really like mine. I had on 07 comp and now have Custom 08 trail. IH stopped selling directly to independent Dealers (IE the path) and now distributing through rscycles. There are couple models available but this is the better bang for the buck. Remember that the MKIII has the same linkage as the Pivot. Depending on how tall he is I wouldn't mind going for a ride and letting him try mine its a 17".

Sounds like he needs to stay away from a trail bike and just stick to an XC bike if he's all about the climbing and just a little cush.
What about a Santa Cruz Superlight? I got my old Juliana for about that price range. Just make sure it has lock out in the rear shock. |

Unless your buddy has the capability to change the laws of physics, if he does 70% climbing then he's going to want to stick with 26" wheels.
![]() I'd vote a KHS...love mine. I'm in for about $1400 bucks with a decent spec (Sun/Ringle, XT/XTR, Thomson, Avid). My bike weighs 29 lbs on the nose, but with more coin you could bring it down to the 27-28 range. Spending 2k will allow him to get top end shocks front and rear with a high-end group as well. My '07 frame was $400 shipped. Good luck!
