Default New CHUMBA EVO!

I hate to disappoint the homers here, but I just picked up a new bike and it's not a Turner!

Let me introduce you to my new Green Mist CHUMBA EVO - 6 inches of all-mountain goodness handmade right here in the OC.

I'm afraid to ask what you paid for that.

Is that a brain shock on the rear? Similar to the Spec'd Epic?

Interesting design. How much does it weigh?

No Gurp, that is a DHX Air. Brain shocks are more geared towards the XC rigs.

Well, full retail is $1850, and I paid less than that. I know The Path and the Bike Co. carry CHUMBAs now and can probably make you a pretty good deal

It's a tad over 7lbs. I'm hoping to get the final build around 32lbs or so.

What's the diff between XC and AM? I thought they were pretty similar, if not synonymous.

What's with the doo-hickey on top of the shock? What's it do?

Hey dub, how come you choose that bike over something like a 6 pack or a Nomad?

Gurp, here's a link to the owners manual. Go to page 16. The dhx air is much different then the brain shock on the specialized epic. Much plusher, more travel, and can handle bigger hits. The brain shock works like a hardtail most of the time and people more oriented towards xc like it for it's efficiency. XC = cross country = lots of miles/climbing and light to mild downhill. AM = all mountain = does mostly everything except that it's not as huge as a full on downhill bike and not as quick as an xc bike.

A few different reasons actually.

After a demo ride, I could tell the EVO was much stiffer for me laterally. You know how on some bikes, under heavy torque, you feel the rear end flex a bit? No such thing with this bike.

My sense of balance and control on the bike was really natural too. When I hopped on the first time, I felt right at home. There wasn't anything that felt odd or uncomfortable.

Initially, I didn't think I needed a 6 inch bike - but after realizing that this bike pedaled like a XC bike, I was sold.

The quality and craftsmanship appealed to me too. The metal work is like art.

And lastly - how many people can say they have a unique handmade MTB?

I think CHUMBA will actually be out at SJT this Sunday doing demo rides. They should have a few EVOs for you to try out.

I have been on one before...they are very nice bikes...good choice. Chumba make great bikes....congradulations. Besides, I always liked their headtube badge.

Right on, thanks! I got confused because MTBR has an "All-Mountain" forum but not a XC forum.

Default New Dubs - Rollin on 26s

I finally got around to begin piecing this thing together.

I ran into one problem right away when trying to put the crown race onto the AM1. I don't know what's up, but there's a bulge on the base of the steering tube that I'm guessing is supposed to create a tight fit with the crown race. Well, the bulge is quite large. I'll try boiling the crown race or something later before I take a hammer to it.

So I passed on the fork for now and started putting together that attaches to the wheels.

I was lucky enough to order these wheels a few months ago so I actually got one of the 108pt engagement Hadleys

Here's a picture of my progress. Hope QR, XT Cassette and Magura rotor installed!

If you look closely, you'll see two other MTBs in the background. They are on-hand as parts donors if need be.

I have that same hub/cassette/rotor combo, and dig it. Build's coming along nicely.

Might want to contact TURNERob before you take a hammer to that fork. He's had a couple AM1's I believe, and has certainly pressed a couple races. Might have some insight for you.

Default Almost there!

Here's where we're at now. Just need to get the shifters and brakes on.

Ran into a little complication with the brakes. I was planning on using Magura Louise FR (180mm/160mm), which comes with IS mounts.

The problem is - Marzocchi used post mounts on their forks this year.

Long story short, I had to buy a 210mm rotor and adapter, and another adapter so I could put the 180mm rotor out back (the 160mm would have looked odd )

They should be arriving overnight from Magura. Let's hope they do so I can get this thing going by this weekend!

Default Wanna ride?

Finally it's ready to ride!

I'll be hitting up the local OC trails this weekend. I've only ridden it around the block and off the sidewalk to try and dial in the suspension. I got the rear at a good spot. It's just the fork that still feels a little funny. Seems like there's a good bit of stiction. Hopefully that'll go away after a ride or two.
