Exclamation Be very careful out there on the trails!!!!

Well, the ribs are almost healed and it only hurts when I try and lift something very heavy and thus have been back on the bike catching up on the riding... feels really good! Fun ride on Sat with Gene and 16 others at Quail Hill. Sunday was another matter!

Decided to hike with the lovely Ranger Nancy (wife). Why not? A little stroll through Aliso woods in the later afternoon would be great... back to a casual pace through nature and build up some love bank credits (you younger grasshoppers take note). Nancy was all excited that I'd be joining her group of hikers. Unfortunately, when arriving at the trail head, I found I had left my socks safely at home... oh well, I'd just go without socks (dumb!)

We get to the meeting place and there are 15 or 16 other hikers ready to brave the Aliso Woods Wilderness. The leader says that we have to watch out for rattle snakes and the dreaded mountain bikers that roam the park (she knows I'm a mountain biker and we all laugh!). That said, off we go. Oh, and that
casual hiking pace I was talking about .... I thought I was in a 4 X 100 Olympic foot race and in about a mile my little toes started annoucing their presence. I quickly made up my mind that I had to turn back or I would be walking a pools of blood.

Now here comes the kicker: the German guy in front of me decides to stop all of a sudden and I hastily step off the trail trying to avoid him... and step into a hole and twist the heck out of my left ankle. Of course I'm too proud to say anything and watch as the ankle starts to swell. I find I can walk on it without screaming and catch up to Nancy. I try to avoid her eyes so she won't see the tears and tell her that I need to go back to the car due to the blisters starting to form. She says that she'll meet me back at the car. The rest of the group stares at me ... me, the heavy weight mountain biker ... who can't even finish a simple little hike through the woods! I turn tail and slink, limping back towards the car.

On the way out I run into Hooiserdaddy (Jeff). He hasn't been riding much lately and is starting to get back into mtbing. He notices the limp and suggests riding me out of the park on his handlebars ... rather an suffer this last blow to my pride, I decide that I'm close enough and can make it... (again dumb) finally getting back to the car in 30 minutes where I collaspe greatfully into the soft leather seats. The ankle looked like a small balloon and one small toe had a penny sized blood blister just waiting to pop!.... So much for a little hike through Aliso Woods. I had a good 2 hour wait until Nancy returned... plenty of time to consider my erroneous ways.

Bottom line here, grasshoppers: That hiking stuff can be deadly .... stay on your bikes!!!

Snazzy.

If it's any consolation, I just finished up PT on my right wrist (which I broke back on March 24th while out riding... you might know that already), and I was all good to go. Then I dove under a wave at Zuma last week and broke my lefty pinky on a sand bar. What a d*ckhead I am.

Oh, and everyone assumes I broke my finger while riding, of course. *_*

Heal fast, OMR.

The good news, Pat, is that you can still bike with a twisted ankle since it's in a single plane ... infact it's good for it for healing once the sweeling goes down.

Sending prayers and healing vibes your way!!!! This must be why I don't hike!!! I have big feet and skinny ankles and I can twist my ankles walking on a tiny pebble (don't laugh, I've done it).

I get a lot of laughs, but I'm always telling the hikers on the Claremont Loop, "I don't know how you can do that without a bike!" Guess I was speaking the truth more than I knew.

Of course, I've always meant it seriously. Without my bike, there wouldn't be much motivation to get to the top!

Anyway, heal well and fast OMR!
