+1 for the outlaws. If you don't mind the weight, they are bomb-proof wheels and still very affordable (around $250 iirc). I have the rough equivalent of them on my DH bike and they are really nice (granted, mine are 32 hole and pinned rims, but still very comparable).

Also, if what Lee said is right, and you're a pretty strong guy, I don't think it will be too much of a problem to get the extra weight spinning. at the very least, when you get onto a lighter wheelset (like the hope/mavic combo from the path) you'll notice you have a good bit snappier of acceleration, etc.

Price seems pretty fair for that build. I was doing the same thing recently and found the prices to be in that range for a Hope Pro II build. All depends on the hoop, spoke and nipple choices. Universal Cycles has a great little wheel builder page. I'm not saying order from them, but it can help give you an idea of pricing. Here's the link:

Good luck.

Wow! Thanks for all the advice guys. From reading all these responses it seems that unless I'm planning on racing, which I'm not, I don't really need new hubs. So, I think I will go with 2whee_lee's suggestion of just replacing the from rim. Should I replace my spokes?

Thanks

oh ps this not being able to ride my bike deal SUCKS!

hey party people!

sorry to rehash an older thread but no sense in starting a new one when this one is just fine.

well an update:

I've been off my bike for almost a week (feels like a year) and I still haven't fixed my little problem.

I was thinking of getting new wheel sets, front and back, but college is freakn' expensive!!!

Now I have to play the starving college student role and ask for some "cheaper" recommendations. Obviously, I can't go too cheap because I would just be replacing the same wheel after a few more rides, but I can't buy super expensive stuff either.

Any thoughts?

BTW this not riding thing sucks!

thanks

that info would help.
the path recommended that I get Mavik 721s because those would pretty much directly replace my stock ones but be stronger....

what is QR? i'm a noob

Cheaper than 250 for Outlaws?

Buy the Azonics....get a paper route, then you can make money and enjoy your bike.

Check out Bicycle Wheel Warehouse. They have some outrageous deals on wheels. I found the site while researching some wheels for my bike. They are in Huntington Beach. They have several set ups using the 721's you were talking about. Good luck.

I know this is a dumb question but when they have a picture of 2 wheels built and everything for $250, does that mean front and rear or are they just showing different angles?

any links to the outlaws?

+1 for BicycleWheelWarehouse. Superb quality build, excellent prices, and superfast shipping to us here in SoCal. I got my 717/XT's from them and I was satisfied with the purchase. I got the wheels within a week, very clean, skewers, tape, etc included.

I'd suggest 721's with cheaper hubs for value, since you're mainly looking for strength. But...sounds like you've got some coin to drop on wheels and I agree with the PATH reccommendation.
