Unhappy Rider dies after breaking her neck

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080829/...us/obit_warren
I just read this story about the triathlete that broke her neck in a bike race last Saturday. I always wondered how I would feel having my ability to ride taken away. She was nodding to have life support removed. Just heart wrenching reading this. Hope she's enjoying the happy trails in her afterlife and prayers to the family!

That's a difficult story to read, very sad. But I'm inspired by her accomplishments and glad that she was able to say goodbye to her family and vice versa. Too many times people are gone by the time loved ones arrive.

It's very sad for all the people whose lives she touched. I hold a lot of respect and gain "oodles" of motivation from people like Barbara Warren. 65 years young and kicking butt in some very tough endurance events. There are just so many people in her age group who die from things that could have been prevented by leading a healthier and more active life. Here's to happy trails ...

Sad story indeed, but I would want the same for myself. No way I want to live hooked up to a machine.

I Almost Posted this in the morning, saw it and read it as soon as it popped up. Its sad that she nodded that she didn't want to be on the planet only being able to use her face. And that she was everything to her twin sister.
Sad story, but it goes to show what can really happen in our sport, and never to take it for granted.

Everyone here who has met me in real life should know that if I had to be on life support, PLEASE Pull the plug. Let me go, I dont want to live like that. I have plenty of life insurance, that either way the wife is getting, just one way she gets it, another it all gets spent keeping me on that life support.

Couragous decision made by her part, noone wants to see a loved one live like that. I know death is painfull, but I have seen a loved one in those conditions before, and belive me, its worse to see them in that state.

It's unfortunate they asked her so soon after the accident. She was likely still in panic mode. She had no time to adjust to her new condition and make a rational decision. Practically murder.

Never, never give up is my motto. There's the chance of stem cell research fulfilling its promise.

New condition? Blinking? I would make the same call she did!

While I agree that stem cell research holds a lot of promise, I dont know how long I could hold out and suffer like that either. Fact is, this administration will never allow it and if McCain gets elected, he wont either.

They made an informed decision as a family and there was dignity. These kind of things rarely turn out that way.

Was it murder? Far from it.

The only stem cell research that some people have a problem with is harvesting stem cells from a fetus. Research (fetuses) is not banned, it just doesn't get federal funding.. No other stem cell research is banned or lacks funding. Read up on current events and you'll see a lot of stem cells being created from something other than fetuses.

Bottom line I believe stem cells are a hot research topic because it's a quick path to a Nobel prize. That there's therapeutic benefit is just serendipity.

Yup, gotta be fact ... I'm sure that there's not one researcher doing anything to benefit mankind, their only logical motivation is a prize.

What's that saying? You don't see people for how they are, you only see them for how you are.

I understand that there is more than one way to harvest stem cells and I have read up on current events ( at least I think I have) but from my understanding, there's no "real" Fed funding for alternative methods as well.

Wow. That's a pretty audacious statement.

She was on a respirator and could not breathe on her own. Back off and please do not hijack a thread about a woman who was an inspiration to so many people by coming in with an agenda for treatment that is still in the research stages.

You've had your say. Start your own thread if you want to discuss your topic.

I read this article in yahoo today and one side i was hoping i trusted my gut feeling and not read this. I say this because i've had accidents before while riding-- serious and so so ones and me, while reading this, will make me feel that i should not ride because while riding i open my self to mishaps like this. (lets be honest this could happen to any rider-- road or trail)

on the other hand i was happy to read this way it may inspire others that even at that age she could have smoked me in the road on my feet, or my bike or in the water. (i have started running 6 miles at a time) and im only in my mid 20s.

i guess even the pros get in to the serious and so so accidents. we just all have to be careful but if its time then its time...

Sunny thanks for your insight I wish you would have kept the piece from your blog about her in your post expressing the positive affect she had on so many people. I haven't been able to stop thinking about this all day and for those like yourself who knew her has to be exceptionally painful. She had some rare gifts and shared them throughout her life. She deserves to be honor
