people ride with lots of things to make them feel safer. the odds are that none of it works any better than a lucky penny (which i don't leave home without).

Beware of Jackalope

Just got home from the Fox Fire. I pepper sprayed two cougars. Very sharp long nails on these old cats.

Pepper spraying cougars!
Great! Now these big cats are spraying us and seasoning us before they eat us? How can they do this without opposing thumbs?

Seriously, if your goging to carry Bear spray, Pepper spray, or anything like that. IT SHOULD NOT BE IN YOUR PACK. It should be on your belt, at teh ready. Other words, it WILL BE TOO LATE by the time you get it out. Knifes for most people are a good idea, for a couple reasons, first off, a knife is a great tool to have anyways, second, there easy to attach and have at the ready, third, if your getting mauled, and you grab the knife, doesnt matter if its small or big, swing away, you get a couple good cuts in, the cats will stop, bears too, But remember stab more than slice, you want to cause multiple points of pain. Chances are, your not going to come anywhere close to killling a big cat or a ebar with a knife, but you will make it think twice about continueing an attack.
With all that said Here is My pepper spray, Please take note of the proper finger placement when handling a firearm. Model 13 Smith and Wesson .357 ![]() ![]() ![]() Little more Info, Hollowpoints are worthless again big cats or bears. You want something like these, first is a moderate velocity soft lead projectile, lots of mushroom action, good stopping power In size of your pinky, out about 5 inch's ![]() This one is a jacketed soft nose round, Hi velocity, hi mushrook factor. Maximum stopping power, in teh size of your pinky, out of about 8 inch's ![]() Save the Hollowpoints for home defense, thats what there for, so they frag inside your target, instead of continuing on. EDIT. Forgot to mention this, Only carry a firearm if you are one, licensed, two TRAINED HOW TO PROPERLY USE IT, and three, if you can carry it easily without it getting in the way. I have mine set up on the inside of the pack, where I can reach back easily and grab it, that is when I take it, which in all honesty isnt too often |

dude, about those pictures. you might want to think about some fingernail hygiene or mountain lions will be the only feline action you'll be getting.

![]() And the "odds are" that you've never been in a situation where having a weapon has saved your life, or where not having one has caused you to be victimized by your assailant... hence the inane comment. Me? yes, i've experienced both. But thanks for sharing! ![]()

art, the "odds are" that the only cougars you need to worry about in laguna beach are dudes.
snap snap snap.btw- i've taught in south l.a. for 8 years and never felt the need to carry anything more than nail clippers. inane=alive. insane=dead.

If you carry pepper spray or a knife, as many people said, it's trying to get at your defense while you're being attacked that is a huge factor.
Related story: when issues of survival are at hand, people suggest you should practice as real-to-life situations as you can. I know you probably can't ask your buddy to attack you while you try to get at your pepper spray, but I think you know what I mean. When we climbed (or tried to anyway) Mt. Rainier last year, I was tying knots practically in my sleep. Learning how to do knots was critical, but I ignored an important aspect of my training: practice tying knots with your gloves on and/or in very cold weather/rain. The training book we used suggested getting in the shower and turning the water on cold, then practicing tying knots. Luckily, I never needed to use anything as there was no emergency but now I shudder to think if there had been. |

SOmething I saw someone else mentioned, and I thought it was really good to remention. If you are going to carry pepper spray in any form, you really should get blasted yourself. You really do need to know what it is like in case you get it in the wrong direction. that way you dont freak out more than you should be

Screw it. I'm going to start carrying hand grenades. And instead of riding a bike I am going to ride in a tank.
Since when did mountain biking become evocative of the cold war arms race? Guys, I am all for being prepared but unless I am going to be doing crit races in Compton, I'll leave the boomsticks at home. Just me. Y'all can do whatever you want. |
