Default My next project

OK, this isn't as cool as building up a Turner or a Ventana or even a weight weenie ride for that matter, but I'm excited about it just the same.

Now, I'm showing my age here, but my first mountain bike was a '93 Trek 820. I worked all summer mowing lawns, etc to save up the money. I finally had enough cash to get it, so I went down to my bike shop right before they closed. I paid for it and rode it home and was the happiest kid on Earth.

The next morning I went on a ride with my freinds and on the way to the trailhead, a lady in a Mazda Miata ran a stop sign and hit me. It bent the frame and--long story short--her insurance company took the frame when they cut the settlement check. My bike shop was out of Trek 820's by that point, so I went with a Specialized Hardrock (which got stolen 2 months later).

Flash-forward to 2003. I got back into MTB'ing and have always wanted to find a '93 Trek 820 frame just like the one I never got to enjoy, to build up more for nostalgia than anything else. I have been on the lookout for nearly 3 years and I finally found a frame with fork on Ebay. I won the auction for only $10 plus $25 shipping.

Well, it came in the mail today. I can hardly wait to build it up. It is actually in really good shape, save for a few minor scratches here and there. Here she is in all her glory. (No I'm not keeping that rear wheel--that goes on my trainer. I just put it on to get some perspective).

I still have my first mountain bike, a Trek 830. From 1992, I think. I was thinking of putting slicks on it and making it strictly a commuter. It has all the original parts, I'm pretty sure.

You've got a good eye there That is indeed a Tracer. Also in the pic is my first modern era bike--my '02 Trek 4500 (only stock part left on that is the frame ) and on the other side of that almost totally obscured from view is my '04 Spec Enduro Expert. Right next to the Tracer is my son's Spec. Hardrock (you can barely see the top tube). Behind me is my wife's Raleigh M20 and her Giant Iguana, as well as my other son's mt bike and his Haro street bike.

Now I know why my wife said "Just what the garage needs--another bike." when the Trek 820 frame came

Nice find. Have fun with the build. I took my brother's old 1988 Performance and single speeded it. I was amazed at how well it turned out.

I agree, I took my old Schwinn Mesa and SS'd it. I need to break it in since I haven't ridden it yet, maybe tomorrow at the Loop.
