Default going down? (shameless bike pr0n)

After waiting an agonizing 5 days, my new frame finally got here yesterday. Boy was I excited. Styrofoam all over the living room as I opened it up, getting odd looks from my mom. Within a few minutes, I was out the door and putting parts on.

A few hours, a gouged thumb, and some swearing later, I finished and was left with this beautiful piece of Machinery:

A few sprints, corners, and a few plowed curbs later, I can say I'm quite pleased, and can't wait to get her on the dirt.

Yes! it's a Thomson!

Oh yeah, I've got 6.7" of Maestro in the rear

Build is as follows:
2008 large Giant Reign X, DHX-3 rear shock
2006 Marzocchi 66SL
supergo Launch wheels
Saint cranks
Formula Oro K24 brakes
thomson stem
sunline V1 bars (29"!)
X9 shifter/short cage der.
2.5" kenda Blue Groove F / 2.35 Nevegal R
and a spiffy WTB rocketV Ti seat that came with the frame.

The best part? She's sitting at ~36 lbs as pictured according to my bathroom scale. not bad for a 1200g front tire, saint cranks, and 2400g of wheels

Yet to come:
E.13 SRS
some bigger brake rotors (going 8/7 instead of 7/6) and sintered pads
and a big fat rear tire for lift-access stuff

thanks for lookin

Nice bike, I see a Mammoth trip in your future. BTW, would you mind me asking how much the frame cost you? And was it including the rear shock?

The Sunline bars are either 28" or now you can get 29" width.

I have the 28" on my Reign and love them.

Sweet build you've got there.

The build on my Reign is close to 36lbs, so you've done well. the only thing I see missing is... dirt

frame cost me 750 shipped, but it is used. That included the frame, headset, shock, seatpost (ritchey) and saddle (WTB rocketV titanium). New from giant, i believe it's 1200 including the shock and headset. They are likely out of stock though, and sadly the '09 models are going to be more expensive

bars are the low-rise 29" model. Tani had some gravity lights that were a whopping 31", but they were way too wide. these guy's feel dialed with a nice combo of low/wide.

They are the 29 inchers. I was quite surprised by the 36lb figure considering some of the parts i have on there, but I'm not complaining. Dirt will come tomorrow.

Very nice build... jeffj knows I've had my eyes peeled looking for one... problem is the Reign X series only goes up to a large, and I need an XL. Good find!

How tall are you? I'm 6'6"(33" inseam, 26" from shoulder to middle of palm, 22" waist to shoulder. it's a lot of torso to spread around) and the bike feels great to me how it's setup. The wider bars put your weight a bit forward (it's kinda like a longer stem without the crummy steering rate). It's very easy to get the seat at full extension. from how things feel, it's pretty similar to my bro's 07 stumpy XL in terms of length, compensating for the shorter stem of course.

If i can somehow lose a pound, and slide around the chainring rule, it is summit legal. Tubeless and possibly swapping out a few components (i might have a lighter saddle, for instance), i should be able to get down to 35 lbs.
I was thinking, keep the SRS and just ziptie 2 more chainrings somewhere on the bike. SS' rules don't specifically state that the chainrings have to be functional, just that there needs to be 3.

I'm right around 6'5", 36" inseam, 210 to 215, and will be looking for an air shock in the rear, with maybe a 160mm Zoke AM-1 fork of some kind, on a Reign XL frame.

Good point on the wider handlebars vs the stem length. That's a Mammoth rig, SS is on borrowed time.

I suppose if you like the longer bikes a bit better, by all means go with the XL. I tend to like a slightly shorter bike, since it's more flickable. I find myself throwing the thing all over the trail, and having that extra leverage is really nice.

And yeah, the bike is definitely going to get it's fair share of mammoth riding. I just like SS cause it's close and convenient.
