Calif. woman attacked by bear, drives self to help APposted: 30 MINUTES AGOcomments: 3PrintShareText SizeAAACALIENTE, Calif. -A woman walking her two dogs in a rural area of Southern California was attacked and severely injured by a bear, but managed to escape and drive herself to a nearby fire station. The woman suffered severe lacerations to her face and head in Tuesday's attack and was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, said county fire spokesman Sean Collins. Her condition was not known. "For her to be attacked in that manner and drive to a fire station, she must have been running on pure adrenaline," Collins said. The woman, whose name was not immediately released, was taking her dogs on a morning walk when the bear attacked near the tiny community of Caliente, east of Bakersfield and about five miles away from an area that burned in a recent wildfire, Collins said. Her dogs also escaped the attack, but one suffered minor injuries, he said. Wildlife trackers and game wardens searched the remote area to capture the bear but had not found it by Tuesday night, said Harry Morse, spokesman for the state Department of Fish and Game. He said the thousands of wildfires burning across the state have displaced wildlife, but was not sure whether that contributed to the attack. Dogs sometimes provoke bear attacks by inadvertently getting between a mother bear and her cubs, Morse said. Fish and Game officials said they will interview the woman to better understand the circumstances of the attack.

We've seen a lot more wildlife just in our own yard since the fires. In the past month we've have two red foxes show up behind our house on a daily basis and now 2 deer that seem to think our yard is now their yard. I wondered if it might be because of the fires and lack of rain since we haven't had that much wildlife so close to our house before, let alone camping out in our yard. I don't worry about the foxes or deer, but a bear is a much different story.

I also heard this story on the news this morning, the local Ranger was indicating unleashed dogs may have provoked the Bear into attack.
If you were walking your dogs in wilderness (not MTB trails) would they be leashed ? or would they be a barrier of protection from what my lie hidden in the brush ? |

Mike is right. Amazing insight from someone who is so directionally challenged. That is near where I live. Just up the hill 30 minutes or so.
This was a very unusual attack. From my experience around here, bears usually book it when they see dogs. They don't want anything to do with them. During bear season the hunters use dogs to find, track, and tree the bears. They then use radio collars on the dogs to find the bear and shoot it out of the tree. Real sporting I know. The bears here seem to have a real fear of people. I think the Piute fire has the bears all scrambling for food at lower elevations. |

this was a freakish incident, kinda like john daly making a golf cut. it could be years and years before either one happens again.

There's roughly 10 bear attacks a year here in the lower 48.

black bears? in california? maybe 1/decade. and they rarely do any serious damage, at least to adults (as opposed to when john daly goes on a rampage).
