Default some advise

Never ever open, or buy a bike shop unless you hate money and love pain.

Sound advice, i'm sure!

However, aside from the undoubted trials and tribulations you must deal with on a regular basis, you've built-up a business you can be proud of, Tani.

but how it will really work out is like this.

Your friends will hang out after hours drinking your beer and watching DH videos ...... And then go home and mail order parts because they can save a few bucks. lol

Ley me just say that you must be doing something right. I dropped of my stinky yesterday for service & we talked about that KHS sorry I couldn't get it thru you. But I did talk them down at discovery. thanks for the blessings though. It would have been my 3rd bike this year from you guys.

Are you still allowed to love bikes if you open a bike shop? I mean, pain is half the game when it comes to that

Like was said, though, You've built one of the best bike shops I've ever visited. Maybe you should take off for a nice, long, 40 mile ride to calm your nerves. always works for me

Owning and running a business is not everything people think it is. I owned a retail business for 5 years with 2 partners and it was nothing but a head ache and I couldn't wait to sell my 1/3 to my partners and get as far away from it as I could. True, if run well, you could make a fair living but dealing with the daily stress of AP, AR, Payroll, customer service, purchasing, returns, employee b.s., customer b.s., it starts wearing on you and one could easily suffer from burn-out. I'm sure for most part you're happy doing what you're doing but I'm also sure you have your bad days where you ask yourself why you're doing what you do and feel like saying eff it all and escape to some remote island to chill for a while with not a care in the world. All very normal emotions and very much part of being a business owner.
Unlike employees, we can't call in sick as there's no such options for us.

Hang in there, dude! Things could be far worse.

Most of the bike shop owners I've known do it for the passion of cycling. Quite a few of them over the years have brought there families over for dinner when things were tight. I don't know you, haven't shopped in "The Path," and haven't even ridden with you but if you'd like to pack up your family your welcome to come over for some grub, some brews and some cycling comraderie ... and I won't ever expect a discount. Keep your head up ...

One of the times I came in over the last few months you were in the bike room sounded/looked like you were doing payroll, for a LOT of employees!

I've respected what you've created ever since it was a baby and you were handing out flyers at the XC races in Fontana - remember that?

You've got to be one of the most successful bike shops in SoCal? I really like your shop, service, riding with you guys. Keep your head up, my friend and soldier on.

Oh, by the way, your bike handling skills are insane now - guess you've had some ride/practice time over the years!
