wow, good thing you came along when you did. Any idea what he hit or what caused the crash?

Oh I failed to mention this is at a place called sheep hills in Costa Mesa that is known for the dirt free-stile jumps. You cant role these jumps because of the large gaps. The kid came up short on his landing. Here look at another film I made. This is where I spend my Saturdays...
and anotherthese are from a couple weeks ago Note: Note my friend Barry the adult w/ his protective hat (no helmet) in the second video. Barry is an ex BMX Pro that now races for Fullerton Bikes. Lee B. Lee 2 wheel knows him too. Randy

After any crash with your helmet, it is advisable to get a new one. There could be internal damage that is not visible or a tiny crack somewhere, leaving you a bit more vulnerable the next time.

Thumbs up Absolutely helmets work, grasshoppers...

Several years back I took a 70 ft header off of Strawberry Peak... had to be air lifted out. Broken this and that with 147 stitches ... the thing that scared me most was the sharp pointed rock that was buried almost one inch into the top of the helmet. Medics took one look at that and said I should be dead... it made a believer out of me. Now I religiously wear the head armor even when screwing around in front of my house.

While living in Colorado I rode often with one of the top Masters road racers in the area, he rarely road with a helmet even on group rides. One day while he was out on a training ride by himself, headed down a slight downhill at about 30 MPH, a dog ran out in front of him. He survived and now has a large metal plate in his head and he vowed to never ride without a helmet again.

He doesn't need a helmet. He has a metal plate in his head. Isn't that good enough. lol jk But seriously, Thats intense. It sucks that sometimes it takes something like that to make a person wear a helmet

My prayers are with him....we've all ridden without them....I thank God last week I was wearing one...I still have a headache from hitting my head on the concrete and my helmet was broken. I can't imagine being without it.... sigh.

Robin,

That was a miracle that you were there on the scene to call medics and remain with him until they arrived. Terrible story. Wonder what the prognosis will be for this young man.

No thanks. I think you should keep your government to yourself.

People have the right/freedom to protect or not protect themselves. That IS NOT the governments job.

Nice try though.

I ate poop at Nobel Canyon a few months ago when a tree stump grabbed my pedal and threw me about 20' down trail landing on my back whiplashing my head into the ground. The plastic cage inside the helmet broke apart and the rear foam is a little crushed. My head hurt for a few hours, my back hurt for weeks...but the biggest pain is the fact that it was an S-works helmet on it's 3rd adventure. I'm ashamed to admit I still use it on the road....with the rationalization that I'm not likely to fall in the exact same way on my head....geez those things are expensive!

I'm just glad the "government" isn't ticketing me for using a damaged helmet.

I agree, just as long as the taxpayers do not have to pay for the medical bills due to head injurys.

damn, hope there's a recovery in that story someplace.

not bike related but i saw a guy in nyc go from heals to head straight up in a fall. head hit first and knocked him out immediatly.

I was ~20 feet away it was the most god awful sound i have ever heard (followed by the snap of my tib/fib in a mtb injury ).

anway, ran to the guy to help him find a huge puddle of blood streaming from his head and his was out f'n cold. i swear he was snorring.

it was totaly whack. anyway for weeks i could not get the sound out of my head of his melon kissing the pavement...it was so loud but hollow.

agree - protect that dome while riding and wear your helmet!!!

In the 20 or 30 seconds that it took me to reach the guy there was absolutely no movement so I knew it was bad. His wheels were still spinning so I guess I just missed a horrific crash. It was a young guy possibly in his late teens or early 20’s. As taught in CPR I tried to get a response from him by tapping his ribs and calling out. No response. Then as I was checking to see if he was breathing I noticed blood dripping out of his ear. I yelled at a lady with a stroller to call 911 but she didn’t have a phone. Mine was buried in my back pack so I dumped it out and called (from now on I’ll make sure it’s handy)

Before the medics arrived he woke up and was trying to get up. I tried to get him to stay put but he kept thrashing around trying to sit up and even hit his head on the cement a couple of times. A police officer got there first and when the medics arrived he said two words to them “no helmet”. I guess that’s all they needed to know.

This poor dude may be eating crayons for the rest of his life. How hard do you have to hit your head to bleed from the ears?

I have 2 words for you........"organ donor".

Wear a helmet, just seems stupid not to.

The taxpayers and people responsible enough to buy insurance pay for the medical bills of others. I am guessing a surprising number of people that don't wear proper safety equipment also don't have the money or insurance to pay their hospital bills. Not sure what the answer is, but sure sucks to pay for other people's stupidity.

A friend of a friend died in May, 3 years after being hit by a drunk driver while riding without a helmet. I had been praying for Danny for 3 years even though I had never met him. It was sad to hear of his death.

Please wear a helmet, if not for you, then for the people who love you.

how big a crash? I caught some loose dirt this week at Big Bear and rolled, a little on my head, but not too bad (soft sand)

Bob, I think the beer you drank at my bday party did more damage than any soft sand could do.

Jeopardy.....

What is the consequence of being a taxpayer and/or paying for insurance.

I used to ride that street on my commute and one of the problems is the speed limit is 50 mph. People get hit a lot in Irvine even with the awesome bike lanes. There is not much respect for riders. The Ride of Silence raises awareness, but not to most of the unaware. A helmet would have made a huge difference.
