Default Missing Mountain Biker

I heard they are searching for some guy at the Monrovia Cyn Park. Dude went out yesterday at 9:00 am and was reported missing at 9:00 pm. Man, my wife better call sooner than that. Hope they find him and that he is ok.

he went up sawpit canyon to white saddle. from there, you can go out vantasell fire road or keep climbing up to rincon ridge. i have done this ride many times and it is 95% fireroad. i cant belive he fell off of the fireroad? hope he is found soon! either major mech. or heart attack or something like that.

Dude,

I served 9 years active Army, I've seen some crazy stuff and be in some scary situations. Nothing scares me more on this planet then getting eaten alive by mt lion, shark, bear, etc. I hope that is not the case with this dude.

some of those parts are pretty lonely/desolate places. you can ride for a long time and see not a single person.

i did a ride there a coupe of years ago on labor day. about 15 miles into the ride, i was looking over my shoulder alot, lots of animal droppings EVERYWHERE. i flatted on a climb....never changed a flat quicker than that!!!

hope to God this guy is ok...

Are Mt Lions a serious danger or is it very rare to have an issue with one?

You're more likely to get hit by lightning.

That said, it pays to be on your toes when riding alone.

A mountain lion was caught not too long ago in Altadena and let go in the Angeles forest. Monrovia has had it's share of bear sightings as has Marshall Cyn. I won't ride in Marshall alone anymore. Best way to be safe is to ride with a buddy.

like craig said, very, very rare to even see one yet alone to get killed by one. mark reynolds was the first person in california in 100 years to get killed by a mountain? that is what i read.

Funny, I'm a cop and I even thought about bringing my back up gun. Then I thought about it realized I would probably end up shooting a Bob cat out of mistake. Maybe peper spray would work.

i used to ride with a guy that carried a ga, just a 22cal. but would still leave a mark if you got hit. pepper spray just pisses them off, best to try and get your bike between you and the cat, make as much noise and generally try and look bigger than the animal. or just shoot it and tie it to the hood of the truck. what say you LAND SHARKY? she's got some out door animal knowledge.

Wasn't it you lookin' to barbecue Bambi we saw last night !! I've studied up on this quite a bit for some local articles and you hit it on the nose (last resort killing,OF COURSE) I know you J/K...as most know really it's a pretty rare situation for bears or mountain lions to be a threat. This guy is an experienced mountain biker and a survivor...let's hope for the best. I believe my brother is involved in that search.

I had a very close call (as in 2 feet away) in 2004 while riding solo through Whiting on a November night. Spotted a light on the trail ahead and it was two rangers on foot. I passed a large oak just as I rolled to a stop, and when they asked me to point my light back down the trail, this mountain lion strolls out from behind the tree. Apparently they had been tracking it since 4:30pm and now (6:00pm) it was stalking them.
The three of us backed out of the trail, yes walking backwards, to their truck to wait for DFG to show up to "dispatch" the lion. We waited 15 minutes thinking it had taken off and not followed us, when it came out of the trail we had just vacated in full view of the truck's spotlight. One ranger said it was approx. 2 years old, and about 24" at the shoulders. The same size that killed my friend Mark. The sucker yawned and walked past the truck into the darkness. Needless to say, I got a ride out of there and they went back into the park to try and find it again. Whiting was closed for three days until they were able to shoot it. I guess it had gotten really close to some kids and another hiker, and was obviously not afraid of humans. Too bad, we've developed suburbia right into their habitat. Don't ride alone!!!!

WOW...very sorry about your friend. Quote "it's a pretty rare situation for bears or mountain lions to be a threat". I guess no matter the stats or what ya read they should always be looked at as a possible threat and treated with much respect...sad that with "progress" times have changed that we end up having to kill so many of them.
