As an auto technition, My serious suggestion is.... go out, test drive, and get what you feel most comfy in.

I cant speak to any of those cars but we are looking as well. We dont want to go with anything too small because I am quite frankly not amazed at how the smallest cars fare in an accident. Were looking at the Altima Hybrid but it's expensive and we worry about the ecological impact once the car is no longer useful.

If you want to by cheap. The new Hyundai's have improved drastically and are decent cars.5 years maybe, depends on how much you drive. But I am all about Toyota. It pains me to say that being a Euro car tech for 13 years or so.

Default Best economy car

I'll throw my 2 cents in! I currently own a Prius, Scion X-B and '07 CRV. Had a 2005 Mini (std., not S). Loved driving my Mini but was a little tight inside for carrying bike gear (& a bike if necessary) plus even a std. Mini is over $20k so I wouldn't call it an economy car. Love my Scion X-B; I put a 1 1/4" trailer hitch on it for use w/my Thule 2 bike rack. Plenty of room for all my bike gear plus back seats are fairly roomy.
My wife has owned two Prius ('05 & '0 and it is really a great car. If you get a basic one (no leather & Nav.) it is similiar price to a std. Mini but you get 45 miles to a gallon.
Test drove a Honda Fit but preferred the Scion. As DirtymikeTBD said, go out and test drive them yourself. Can't beat the reliability of a Honda or Toyota product. Good luck!

Another vote for the Element ... two bike inside and safe, plus room for a metric butt ton of other stuff.

Gabe, I bought a pre-owned Toyota Camry in 2003. 90,000 miles (currently)and not a single problem. Just change the oil and tires and you're good to go.

BTW 25mpg in city.

I've been told the Element is rocking. I can't speak from experience.

I can't fit crap in any of those cars and I can't imagine driving any of them more than an hour or two before I went nuts and chewed my way out of the car via the air vent.

Good luck in your decision!
