You may also be twistng your foot in a weird way to unclip . You shouldnt put a bash on your bike to protect your leg it is a temperary solution to a bigger problem and makes you look like a newb, well the 3rd ring protector ( sorry pamela)

I agree with you on the gearing. On every occasion I have been bailing out while in the wrong gear. Ill avoid the bash protector unless I'm backon STR bitching about the 5th inquiry.

Thanks all for the suggestions!

Am I missing something? I don't even see how it's possible to hit your leg on the big ring. I wish someone could explain this.

What is the process of your unclipping? How does your leg find it's way to the inside of your crank to even get close to your ring?

Basically, just unclick your foot when at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Hmmmm.... yes, I think you need to get out with some folks and let them have a looksee...

Good luck.

Really? You've never had the right of passage scar on your right leg? Look carefully - it seems like almost every mt. biker has the patented teeth mark.

Methinks ya are ....I've had every part of a bicycle tag every part of me more than once.

I've also got a big-ring scar on the top of my right quad, just above my knee. Pretty crazy story too.

Zee point eez- you ride long enough, sooner not later Mr. Bicycle is gonna violate you in ways you never thought possible.

Have a great ride! (are hand grips 'posed to go there? )

I got an idea.... put your chain in the middle ring, and PLant your foot on the ground with the bike still rolling. Or if you fall the right way the big ring can gouge you too.
Haven't you ever slipped a pedal? Some people slip pedals, others get "Raped" by the Big ring.

It's common enough to be called a big ring tattoo. But it's associated with falling not clipless pedals. If fact if you're clipped in (on the right) there's no way to get a tattoo.

I'll guess that with the difficulty of unclipping vs. flat pedals the OP has moved from a habit of placing his left foot down first to trying to place his dominant right foot down first.

I guess this is my point. I have been MTB'ing about 17-18 years, and have never had this occur. I have had many weird and annoying injuries, just never this one. A head scratcher to me I guess.

I've also never banged my knee on the stem, another apparently common occurrence.

Happy Trails.
