im going to using it to time how long it takes me to get throu a trail, how far iv gone, to know where i am some times

I had a 305 and right now I am using a 705. The Garmin Edge GPS units are the best on the market. The 305 does everything you will need and you can find them fairly inexpensive online these days if you look.

Try looking into costco, usually have some pretty good price, I recently picked up a Tomtom Go 920 for $299.95 not bad for a retail price at bestbuy or circuit city @ $699.95.
Costco sometimes carry Tomtom, Garmin, Navigon, you just got to check what stock they carry.
