I have debated with myself about riding to or from work at least once. The 40 miles that it would take worries me a little bit. From Temecula to Rancho Bernardo. I don't have a road bike, so it would need to be my MTB.

Maybe ride home on Friday, and back to work on Monday.

Just did a Google Map with Home and Work addresses, Avoid Highways. 48 miles one way.

I think I might just do it.

BTW, You can use Google Map to get directions, there is a Check box to "Avoid Highways". That may help find a route that you didn't think about.

Yeah, the safety issue is the big one. When I commute on bike to work (about 2 times a week along Hwy 101 in Carlsbad/Encinitas) I am very conscious of the cars around me. I've been t-boned once by a Jaguar on the road but the funny thing was the jag had more damage (driverside front quarter panel and driver door were crushed - by my superfat shoulder) than my bike (taco'ed front wheel and jacked up handlebar and levers). I realize that I was super lucky and it is usually the other way around.

One tip I have is if you have a helmet mounted night ride light, turn it around and use it when you commute. Mine has a flash mode (Dinotte 200) which is obnoxiously bright, even during the day. I have noticed that cars seem to give me a wider berth on the road. I figure if they have eyes, they will see me. Maybe they think I'm some sort of bike cop or something, who knows. I read somewhere that lights are the cheapest insurance you can get if you ride the road. I believe it.

Plus, it never hurts to buy a disability policy!

The knife comment above is kind of over the top but there may be some truth to it. Ever since the cougar attacks on mtbers picked up, I now carry a knife in a composite sheath (CRKT) on my camelback. It is slung under my left arm so I can grab it with my right hand if I need it. On some far out rides in wilderness areas, I've run into some folks who did not know me and seemed kinda sketchy. They saw the knife and were real nice to me. Maybe that works on the road, who knows.

Getting from Mission Bay to Chula is where I can't figure it out.

I've had water bottles thrown at me before...not fun.

From Mission Bay take the Pacific Hwy to downtown, from downtown go past petco and convention center, down thru national city. only tricky part is the bike bridge over the canal at the 54

I mapped it out for you here

I am meeting a friend in PB we are riding up thru La Jolla to the 56 and then out to RB if you want some company for part of the ride.

Go SOX!

Even if I had to go somewhere that day it wouldn't be practical for me.

Unless I am away from home my commute is normally just down the stairs to my desk.

If not its either to Ventura/Santa Barbara area or an airport. Neither of which would work very well.

What's the best way to do LJ to the 56? Is there another option to getting on the freeway??

I've got 5 or 6 people on board at work to ride in. We're considering a downhill race on the main staircase although it does go past the CEO's office - could be a CLM (career limiting manouvere)

Art aren't you looking for work?
I wish my commute was longer and was not in the Hood. I get things thrown worse than bottles!!! The loose viscious dogs and their owners, along with shards of glass and pot holes, train tracks and stupid drivers!!! Oh did I leave anyone/anything out...

You can go past the torrey pines golf course to Carmel Mnt road to the 56 bike path instead of going down Gennesee and down the 5 to sorrento valley road.

There is a group of us that ride Road every Tuesday night not a super hard ride just a few MTB guys/girls jumping on the road bikes and spinning. We leave from Sorrento Valley road 5:30-6pm each week. Email me if you are interested Scott at geekhousebikes.com

I usually commute 2-3 days a week, 46 miles round trip. The best part of my commute is riding ON the 15 for a half mile to connect Pomerado rd. with Via Rancho by the mall. I can't wait till they get the foot bridge finished!

I would ride my bike to work, but I'm unemployed.

So on that date, I will open up the garage and hop on the bike. My journey will begin by rolling out of the driveway. Then, after I've rehydrated, I will turn around and make the climb back up the driveway (roughly a 0.5% grade).

PS, if anyone knows of a place currently hiring, PLEASE let me know. I'm dyin' here.

Used to commute at my previous job in LA area, but havent since I started working in the IE. But I will be gearing up, not sure which day or days yet. Lets see some creative posts this week - whose commute was the nicest, narliest, longest, shortest, most interesting route, etc.

4.3 miles to the train station and 4.5 miles back but couple of hills(beach to rosecrans to and up gilbert). Been riding to the station a few days now and what a great work out on the way back and wakes me up on the way over. So far my tank of gas has lasted me 2 weeks with half of tank left still. It's great!
